GoDaddy Terminates Domains for Complaints without Proof??

What the hell? I just got a complaint notice from GoDaddy that they are terminating my service for a complaint they received against my domain and they don't seem to be providing any links, proof or anything? What gives? Some guy sends a complaint about my domain and they can disrupt my entire business? And now they want $100 to transfer the domain to another registrar or $199 to fight the complaint? This is complete bullshit! Since when has GoDaddy been doing this? Eugh, what a great way to disrupt all my sales and traffic!!

And of all domains, they have to do this to my tracking server! What the hell!!
WG

BVF 04-03-2008 08:38 PM

Now I see why you don't divulge anything...

ouch that sucks

WiredGuy 04-03-2008 08:41 PM

What I don't get is they're completely not co-operating. They won't tell me where the complaint was from or what to do about it. They just want a $100 transfer fee or $199 fee to agree to stop. I have no idea how to stop a complaint without them telling me the complaint which I find completely absurd. And of all domains, my central tracking server, this completely has stopped all my traffic from resolving, they effectively shut down my entire business by doing this!

Gordon G 04-03-2008 08:41 PM

what was the domain ?

onlineriches 04-03-2008 08:41 PM

GoDaddy has always been a piece of shit registrar.

I learned my lesson the first time when they held one of my domains ransom because of "complaints".

I wouldn't trust them with anything of value after seeing how they conduct themselves.

datatank 04-03-2008 08:42 PM

Dude pay the $100 and get it the hell out of there ASAP if its an important name for you

My tracking server, its used to track every single p2p and seo hit. It logs to my database for outgoing hits and redirects. Every single domain i own redirects through this domain so there's no chance i can update thousands of links at this hour of the night.

Already did. Complete blackmail in my opinion, but by morning every domain will be switched out of GoDaddy. Not to mention I need to call Visa to see if this fee can be charged-back as its really extortion. I'm just waiting the 2-3 hours to re-activate the domain. They're giving me 24 hours to move registrars.

sounds like they found a new profit center very fucked up.

FreeHugeMovies 04-03-2008 08:50 PM

There have been many horror stories about go daddy over the years.

They truly act like a professional organization and know how to treat customers. It is comical how the customer support agents take things personally and make the situation a lot worse.

File a complaint with the BBB and as you mentioned charge back the ransom fees with Visa.

Good luck on moving all your names in 24 hours. Godaddy is pain in ass to get names out. Im not sure now but you used to have to take em off domains by proxy and if you even want to edit the email on the contact it forces them to be locked at GD.
PAIN IN ASS

DatingGold 04-03-2008 08:56 PM

that sucks.. sorry man

I'll wait to talk to my bank manager until I transfer all my domains in the morning. In the meantime, they just charged my CC $100 and waiting for the DNS servers to be put back online... soooo frustrating.

Great, all my domains have domains by proxy. Whats the process to transfer? Unlock domains, disable domains by proxy and then switch?

And THIS is why I use directnic.com I like that I can contact one of the owners and bitch directly - not that I've had to in years and years. :)

A domain is one of the most important aspects of your business. Don't just trust it with anyone.

Linguist 04-03-2008 09:17 PM

I've always been telling people to get the hell out of godaddy, they've been doing this for at least couple of years now.

You would think that a company like godaddy would take the complaint and look into it themselves first before doing anything drastic....

You haven't mentioned what the nature of the complaint was?

Was it completely and obviously unfounded?

I already lost a domain because of DirectNIC. No chance I'll ever use them either.

SomeCreep 04-03-2008 09:26 PM

Wiredguy, did Godaddy deactivate/switch the DNS on just the 1 domain of yours that generated the complaint, or did they deactivate/swtch the DNS on all of the domains in your account?

I have no idea. I didn't feel like arguing with their abuse department and just paid the fee to get it re-activated. Their email was extremely vague, see below. Any emails to request information regarding the complaint was not replied to or they simply copy/pasted typical form-mail replies. I have no clue what the complaint was about, I just paid the fee to get my domain unlocked.

Go Daddy defines spam as any communication sent to recipients, as an advertisement
or otherwise, without first obtaining prior confirmed consent to receive these
communications from your domain by the recipient. This includes, but is not limited
to, the following:
Email Messages
Newsgroup postings
Windows system messages
Pop-up messages (aka "adware" or "spyware" messages)
Instant messages (using AOL, MSN, Yahoo or other instant messenger programs)
Online chat room advertisements
Guestbook or Website Forum postings (aka "weblogs" or "blogs")

If you wish remain a Go Daddy customer and wish to close this matter you must reply
to [email protected] with the following:

1. A statement that you (or your employees, affiliates, 3rd party marketers, etc.)
will no longer make off topic or unauthorized Website Forum/Weblog postings.

2. Authorization for GoDaddy.com to charge a $199 non-refundable administration fee
to the credit card on file for your account. You may want to log into your Go Daddy
account and confirm that the card on file is valid and has not expired.

If you reply with this statement and agree to pay this fee, Go Daddy will accept, in
good faith, your commitment as proof of your desire to correct this problem.

Please be aware that Go Daddy will continue to monitor this situation. If after you
commit to ceasing this activity it is determined that this problem persists, your
domain name may be immediately redirected and your service suspended. We realize
additional complaints resulting from the posts you have just committed to stop may
come in and we will of course consider this, and contact you before taking action.

-----
If the solution outlined above is not agreeable to you, or you are unable to comply
to these terms, you will need to transfer your domain name to another registrar.

If you choose to transfer your domain name to another registrar, we first require
that you pay a $100 administration fee before this domain name can be transferred.
These fees are used to cover the costs of responding to or "cleaning up" the
outstanding spam complaints Go Daddy has received regarding your domain name.

d-null 04-03-2008 09:38 PM

hmm, strange email... so if I am reading it correctly, they are policiing spam on the internet by disabling your domains?

so if I wanted to blackhat a competitor that is on godaddy, all I have to do is crank out some spam newsgroup and forum posts telling people to visit their website, then report it to godaddy???

clickhappy 04-03-2008 09:41 PM

So who is a good registrar to go with?
I might switch my domains out of them from all the horror stories.

Phoenix 04-03-2008 09:43 PM

and have them all shut down

i bet they have some doozies

Certainly seems that way. They milked me out of $100 for it. Hope it was worth it for them, they just lost 40 domains from ever being renewed.

anyone in the pornbiz needs to know this
and blacklist at least these 2 registars
godaddy.com
domainnamesystems.com

both registrars should not be used at any cost.

sorry to hear it

you really should phone them up and get a better explanation, sometimes talking to a real person will get a more sane response than emails

its not like you are running a splog network or anything, they should be reasonable if they look at your situation i would think..... I've had luck with them on other issues by phoning

Woman on the phone was worse. She kept pushing for payment to get this fixed. Of course I caved. Between $100 to get this fixed now and arguing for what would have been several hours, I decided to cut my losses and just pay the $100.

BVF 04-03-2008 10:01 PM

I gotta give Network Solutions credit when a now banned poster on gfy named 49th parallel went on a year long campaign to get my domain yanked....Fortunately, I kept the email telling me everything was all clear so when it happened again, I just forwarded them their own email....They also called my voicemail number that is listed with them and left a message....If I didn't respond, it would have been my ass but thankfully I routinely check my voicemail...

And another thing......Network Solutions never let me know who the actual complainant was but they forwarded me an email from the person with their info stripped...It was obviously 49th parallel whining like a bitch to Network Solutions because he has complained over and over again and nothing is happening and what does he have to do to get them to act....

I'm glad that tool is banned.

thats cuz a 2nd one (domainnamesystems.com) is NOT a real registrar. In fact its not even a registrar, its really just some bullshit place with a dude holding your domains in his bedroom.

I've got 50+ domains with namecheap and really like them... they're just a reseller for Enom. With over 50 domains you can get a discount on the prices.

I also have 20+ domains with bulkregister.com... They were bought by Enom awhile back..

And I have 20+ domains with networksolutions.com... You can get competitive rates with them. I'm a "vip" member, whatever the hell that means. I threatened to move all my domains last year and now I get them for about $10.

I must be lucky as I've never, knock on wood, had any problems with any of my registrars.

ztik 04-03-2008 10:37 PM

They have been doing this for years. They run their own tos that overrides the standard one, not sure how it works. I had my lawyer hit them and they put my domain back online. I would advise doing the same, fast.
