That's actually not how it was constructed, as it it loops.
Like I say, I was / am part of the art group who did this.

Tiles were drawn as follows

Large rectangle, with the middle missing
and smaller rectangle, that fitted into the middle

So you'd be zooming towards the smaller tile, when it hit the size boundry, it'd swap w/ the larger, and the next smaller tile would fit in.

It was a collaboration of multiple artists making their tiles seamless.

I didn't give it that long; I got bored. Tiles are not as cool as a good old Triton fake Mandelbrot zoom. :)
