Our studio uses Sony Vegas Pro 8, a few guys still use 7

qxm 04-12-2008 09:08 AM

now that I've migrated my stuff from Sony Vegas (which is very decent) to Adobe Premiere I have to say .. Premiere kicks ass ... those who don't like it may be encoding/editing with windows movie maker ....... lol

I also hear good things of the Ulead video editor....

stickyfingerz 04-12-2008 09:13 AM

Adobe Premiere cs3 :thumbsup

MaDalton 04-12-2008 09:15 AM

ulead media studio pro 8

Vegas........

Used to use Avid xpress pro. Actually gave Vegas Pro 8 a shot and after rewiring my brain around it, and taking some tutorials to get used to it's quirks, I am really liking it. It seems far easier to accomplish more advanced things like colour correction and video effects.
Plus it can handle almost any file format, new captures, the new AVCHD hard drive codec, even previously encoded WMV's that we sometimes just wanna cut up or what ever. Unlike Avid which really didn't like to import much at all. (Yes I know it's a high end software and just doesn't bother with the prosumer formats, I know) But Vegas is the Windows version of Mac software that "It just works".

(PS tried migrating to Mac a couple months ago, while I was impressed at how easily it did complicated things, I switched back due to how difficult it makes the simple things, that I do on a day to day basis.)

vegas pro 8 :) By the way vegas people a new update 8c is coming soon.

ExtremeBank_Adam 04-12-2008 10:22 AM

We use Sony Vegas as well.

CrkMStanz 04-12-2008 10:23 AM

Adobe Premiere

Love it... does everything I could want it to

Sebastian Sands 04-12-2008 10:26 AM

Adobe Premier Pro CS3 suite. I personally love how all the Adobe programs work together without any issues. And it handles HD like butter

well ok... when i used to edit under windows, it was a combo of Premiere and After Effects.

Now I've simplified my life a whole lot by switching over to MAC. You dont have much of a choice if you want to edit anything HDV and above.

Cs3 handles hdv with 0 issues. :2 cents:

I disagree, HDV is all i edit now, and Vegas handles it beautifully. Anything higher I'd still go for Avid over FCP anyway.

Jim_Gunn 04-12-2008 10:49 AM

Adobe Premiere CS3 and the Aspect HD plugin. Been using Premiere since ver. 6.5.

MaDalton 04-12-2008 11:00 AM

all you CS3 enthusiasts: how do you capture HDV from a Sony cam with working scene detection? without buying extra software?

why not use vegas if you're using sony cameras? it's great software and it's set up to import any sony file and plugins set it up to pull anything else.

I just finished a movie using Ulead VideoStudio 11, and I dont think I will use that program ever again. It had some nice features, and was easy to use, but I had too much trouble with syncing the sound and pictures and other idiotic small things

For my next project, im going for pinnacle..

actually i found a solution (i use premiere 1.5 and the mainconcept plugin), i just thought it's embarrasing that this still doesn't work in Premiere CS3

for editing i am used to Ulead - and that is so easy to use that i can teach more or less everyone within 1 hour to edit trailers for me. and i can even edit HDV with my mediocre laptop with it - which i'm doing right now on my sofa while writing this :winkwink:

ulead media studio PRO is in no way comparable to their consumer products. it's a professional software just like Premiere or Vegas. unfortunately since Corel bought Ulead they seem to discontinue Media Studio Pro :disgust

brandonstills 04-12-2008 03:52 PM

I was using Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows but not on any serious amount of work. Just a few trailers and stamping videos. Used Cleaner to encode the videos.

qxm 04-12-2008 04:22 PM

nice thread ;)

morningstar 04-12-2008 04:39 PM

I use ULEAD, saves time great output

DirtyDanza 04-12-2008 04:41 PM

anyone who makes a statement like that needs to do research..

windows based editing is all consumer and a little bit prosumer

pro stuff like hollywood movies are done with other things...

but there are many many good windows programs out there.. pinnacle liquid was able to match final cut but I dunno now.. im on a mac...

Danger Mouse 04-12-2008 07:37 PM

Oh good lord drop that MAC is God shit. :1orglaugh

Penny24Seven 04-12-2008 08:37 PM

adobe premiere for HDV. don't know what the hell I am doing and everything still comes out nice

Lance69 04-12-2008 08:40 PM

It's all about the software. Macs are PC's nowadays.
Avid can be run on both windows and Macs. So not really a great argument that Windows can't do pro editing. There's a reason Hollywood movies are edited more often on it than FCP the Mac only standard.
This movie is pretty recent.

It does what we want it to, and that's what we need :2 cents:

Robbie 04-12-2008 09:08 PM

I think your just upset cause your the only person in history who's partner got a mac pro with all the bells and whistles and claims it loaded photoshop slower than like a 486/sx... join reality.. get a mac and stop crying.. windows machines will never come close to the mac...

people in the know choose mac....

tony286 04-13-2008 10:33 AM

I will be there tomorrow so I will report what I see and when I see it.. im not taking any video cameras though to film anything I suppose ill take my little pas cam

mikesouth 04-13-2008 10:50 AM

Vegas 8 beats anything even on the mac. Final Cut pro is way over rated and even more overpriced. Vegas does a better job on HDV or SD hands down.

GrouchyAdmin 04-13-2008 11:17 PM

MSPAINT.EXE and VirtualDub.

basschick 04-13-2008 11:20 PM

another sony vegas user here :)

i sometimes use other programs for ripping, simple splitting and batching, but for editing, watermarking and 1 video at a time encoding, vegas rocks!

NoWhErE 04-13-2008 11:41 PM

Funny how the PC guys have to install 3rd party programs to get their stuff working.

But here is the point : I've edited on PCs for nearly 10 years now. I was a die hard PC user. Then I tried a MAC and realised : Oh shit, I've been complicating my life for nothing.

Still love my PCs, but when it comes to getting a job done quickly and with high quality output, I go with a MAC. Plain and simple.

If you haven't tried BOTH systems extensively, then dont even bother trying to debate the issue cause you haven't seen what the other system has to offer.

As for AVID, yes its still the backbone of mainstream hollywood, but there is a very obvious reason for it :

Editors are in a Guild... they control the game and keep the work to themselves. Most of them have been at it for 20+ years. They've learned how to edit on AVIDS and simply haven't bothered to learn another system.

Since they are seniors in the game, they decide what post-production studios equip themselves with (avids in this case), cause thats what they know. So the younger crowds have to learn to use it too if they want to stay in the game.

Once the older guys retire, the new generation of Editors will most likely switch over to a more user friendly editing system.

Why you ask? Cause who in their right minds wants to have to click 5 times just too add a bloody fade to a clip?!? hehe
