never seen this one done before. ill answer what i can, i know certain areas in that market very well (and others poorly) and have some free time this morning.

Affiliate networks/systems

In mainstream many merchants (programs) have their own merchant accounts for the sales they send themselves and use affiliate networks for traffic from partners.

See, in adult you have ccbill, nats, mpa3, netbilling, etc, and these are systems attached to processors or leased out/handbuilt. In mainstream there are hundreds of affiliate networks, and its their own business model. Their purpose is to attract affiliates to join, then they lure the merchants with the promise of many affiliates promoting them (they take 20-30% of the margin on the products from the advertiser/client.)

Much more spread out than adult, you have many huge companies with some very smart people and I would guess 20% of the market is biased against adult.

the affiliate networks generally use pixel tracking on the signup page, was something interesting to mention

i guess the general thought is that the first years of the net (1995-2001) or so adult made it big. all the new innovations were done in adult, including the move from the CPM (paying per impressions) to CPA (cost per acquisition/sale). much of mainstream is still using indirect methods, which adult moved out of for the most part 4-5 years ago.

mainstream shows used to suck and be very tame with few parties and everyone going home or doing their own thing after the convention, but now they are catching up to shows like internext/WA/phoenix forum


many more cute girls in mainstream. ironic, isnt it. its much easier to get action at a mainstream show than adult (the ratio of girls/guys is around 50/50, if not better, and they tend to send the attractive ones to the show ;))

Adtech, Siggraph, and NAB shows and websites are great.

id start to look at some of the mainstream boards, like digitalpoint/sitepoint/webmaster world (sorry if this violates a rule posting names of mainsream boards, if so pls delete). those boards to the adult ones are huge ie alexa rank of 200.

and i would join some of the affilie networks (like cj.com, clickbank.com, etc) to see what you can promote, im sure you can find something, and there you are testing the water

the biggest one is digitalpoint, amazing place. whole forums for google adwords, marketing, processing, etc. adult boards are tiny in comparison

see thats the part that im kind of fuzzy on, as traffic is not my biz, but id refer him to clickbank and have him sign on as an advertiser.

its the same as adult tho, you have to know what you are doing, affiliates are only going to promote your stuff if you can incentivize them to, whatever you got to do. good luck man

What mainstream products or services can you recommend for highly targeted search traffic? I'm interested in stuff that with payouts or commisions that can compete with what adult places are paying.

Its not uncommon for me to see .25-.50 a click returns with adult PPS model.

a mortgage sale can be worth 5k to a merchant (vs. the present time value of a porn surfer, maybe $90), you can get some nice prices per click

its interesting. there are the vices, gambling/porn, etc that mainstream looks down upon.

people like to have things to look down on

adsense is very tough, especially now. i would focus on using it on your own traffic before you start outlaying money.

lots of competition in adwords/adsense these days. no sense in jumping in until you know it well enough, if you dont want to lose a grip of money

this is an old thread, if you didnt notice, but webmasterchecks sends checks/paypal out for a lot of mainstream businesses. person.com is one of their big ones
