Blu Ray Players/Should I wait to get one?
I know Blu Ray has won the battle over HD DVD but are the players lacking in technology? I've been reading some reviews and most peeps are saying hold off because the players aren't up to speed yet.
Any thoughts? |
Go ahead and buy one, markets too big now for any major adjustment
|
id wait.. prices will drop hardcore soon
|
all depends...if you watch movies, go for it.....if youre a gamer (like me)...get the PS3...its a nice addition to every other consule, pc, mac, hand held gizmo in my house.....plus if & when the technology advances and players come down in price because everyone will make one, you still have the gaming...
i waited until it was decided and then figured wtf, bought a PS3 and have enjoyed the movies out today....all of us know that the technology advances so quick it wont matter if you buy now or later...something bigger & better is always on the horizon....do what makes you happy....otherwise youll always be asking.."should i wait?"... |
PS3 is the best blu-ray player out anyway.. just get one of them.
Also works great for playing files off your pc... oh.. and it plays ps3 games as well : ) |

Definitely get the PS3. You'd think a movie player bundled in a game console would be shit, but it's actually the best option out there right now for blu-ray movies.

get the ps3.. game console + blue ray player in one.. rather than pay for a player alone.. you can get a remote I believe that works on the console..
I use my xbox360 for a player for now, but will get a ps3 next .. I removed my dvd player all together from the entertainment center.. |

Seems to me he meant he would wait a month for the blu-ray version, rather than watching the regular DVD version, since the blu-ray versions are sometimes harder to find in rental stores. |

I can't see how anyone that posts here complaining about tube sites and surfers getting too much free content then downloads movies without paying for them. Just seems hypocritical |
I have some HP HTPCs with Blu-Ray, works awesome. That's what to buy.

Regardless, he also mentioned RENTING, which usually doesn't come into play when talking about downloading movies. |

If theres a movie up I really want to see now, and i'm gonna buy anyway in a month when it hits shelves.. I'm downloading it. |

I don't know how you got that idea from my post. |
Wow, I was gone for a few minutes and there's a lynch mob after me.
I don't download movies. Even if I was the type to steal content, I wouldn't download movies, since I want the BEST possible quality, not some crappy rip. The term transfer is referring to the diff between a regular dvd "transfer" which usually looks like shit, and a Blu ray "transfer" which utilizes the extra disc space for the best possible compression quality -- and uncompressed audio. |

I built a HTPC with the HD/Blu-ray combo drive and I am happy with it. Previously I had the Toshiba A3. I gotta say the upscaling was so badass I wasn't keen on running out and buying a lot of new discs, since it made my regular DVDs look awesome.

Does PS3 offer 5.1 sound? I guess this is its weakness.

"Blu-ray Disc playback now supports DTS-HD Master Audio? and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio? output" |
Who cares? Buy whatever the hell you want!
|
Just buy a cheapie upconverter dvd player. When blu ray is cheap within 12 months then get one.
|
PS3 is the only player worth buying right now, as it will be upgradeable to profile 2.0
The rest, in my opinion not so much. I had a hard time swallowing the "you need a toy to play movies!" - but it truly is a great little device. Since it's the same price as the standalones, you really cannot lose with it. Also, of course it supports 5.1 audio, right now. This is the standard dolby digital/DTS you're used to. The firmware update is for uncompressed "HD Audio" which requires a receiver that supports it over HDMI. Mine does not currently, but it's next on the upgrade list :) |
thanks for all the advice, I did some serious investigating and researching all the home theater sites, they ALL said 100% with out a doubt get the PS3, even if your not a gamer.
so today I'm buying PS3 and a surround system that supports DTS HD audio via HDMI. Next question is which one of those do I buy,LOL |

PS3? System Software Update 2.20 BD Live support : Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE) is now supported. |
I would get the PS-3 instead of a blu-ray player only if you don't care you can't get it to work properly on a universale remote, you gotta use Sony's remote... that is the only reason I'm waiting.
and now there's no competition, those fucking Blu-Ray players are going to take forever to come down in price. even today Netflix said how it was "We are charging a premium for Blu-Ray discs because people are used to paying a premium for for high-definition content" and now there's no reason to drop the price... when they were competing for users, you could get 5 free Blue-Ray discs with a blue ray purchase, they stopped that promotion as soon as HD-DVD dropped out. fucking sux. |
Well, shit. I was about to buy one.
I don't even play video games. Should I still get a PS3? I guess I would always have the option. I didn't even know they could play movies. So a PS3 and a Blu-ray player are the same price? The PS3 isn't one of those impossible to get things that you have to stand in line all night at Best Buy, is it? Because if I can't walk in somewhere in grab it off a shelf, then no way am I standing outside with every 18 year old gamer in my city. :1orglaugh |

|

I've never played a video game in my life. Unless you count Frogger, Donkey Kong, Pitfall, Ms PacMan and Qbert, on an Atari. Which, btw, I rocked. |
Playstation 3 baby! Handsdown :thumbsup
Also get that HDMI wire and you're in business :) |

Do NOT waste money on Monster brand cables. overpriced. All HDMI cables are all the same. Luckily my local wal-mart had the PS3 HDMI cables that were $40 on clearance for $4.50. Hard to pass on that. |

"Steal" is/should be the wrong turn.. If movie studios would release DVDs on the same day the movies go into fucking dumpy filthy movie theaters full of inconsiderate fucking pricks wearing enough perfume/cologne to make the entire country of france smell pretty, yapping on their fucking cell phones, opening up their candy wrappers, tapping their feet like they were in a drumline, and letting their fucking kids run around for two hours like its their own personal gymnasium... I wouldn't have to download their movies. |

Exactly.. I've been using $3.99 HDMI cables from NEWEGG flawlessly for years.. Monster is a marketing gimmick for idiots with money to burn. |

blu-ray: wait or purchase now
i sell them.
wait until winter. most of the BR players out this summer still won't uniformly have complete compatibility and internet functionality. |
Nope... can't wait... and shouldn't have to...
and they may not own the theaters, but the do have a hand in distribution. theres no reason to not do simultaneous theatrical/dvd/on demand releases. and for the record.. i've downloaded hundreds of pre-release movies... and later bought every one.. i don't sell the downloads, i don't share the downloads... i either watch them, or i dont.. then either delete the files or toss the dics.. so don't think of it so much as stealing.. but more along the lines of a taking a fully functional trial period.. offered by so many software companies. |
Quote:
also, be wary of deep discount cables. sometimes they are HDMI category 1, hence the price. (and no, i don't mean HDMI 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3). HDMI category 2 is the type of cable consumers should be looking/asking for. |
Get the PS3, instead of BR player.
