http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1098327/

[Based on] The King Piccolo Saga [Dragonball], also known as the Piccolo Daimaoh Saga (Demon Lord Piccolo Saga) is the penultimate saga from the anime Dragon Ball. It occurs after the Tien Shinhan Saga and precedes the Piccolo Junior Saga. It includes the battles between Goku and King Piccolo's sons, Goku's first encounter with the Samurai warrior, Yajirobe, Goku's quest to find the Holy Water, his final battle with young King Piccolo, and the birth of Piccolo Junior

Appearances also made by Yamcha and Bulma but regretably not Bwar or Oolong, nor even Krillin. Ox King and his Daughter Chi Chi are speculated

It's Chatwin vs. Marsters in Dragon Ball Z

20th Century Fox has set Justin Chatwin (The Invisible, War of the Worlds) to play Goku and James Marsters ("Smallville," "Angel," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") as the villain Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z.

In the big screen adaptation, Goku is a powerful warrior who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.

Actor/writer/director Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle) is producing. Final Destination helmer James Wong will direct from a script he wrote. Ben Ramsey wrote an earlier draft.

The story is based on Akira Toriyama's popular manga that has spawned graphic novels, a long-running TV series and more than 25 video games. The Jump Comics division of Tokyo-based Shueisha published the "Dragon Ball" manga.

With shooting scheduled to begin later this month, Fox will bow the sci-fi/adventure worldwide Aug. 15. Chatwin has already begun training with 87Eleven, the stunt performance company behind the action sequences in The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and 300.

Yeah, the Dragonball story is very weak. Even for a child's series.
It doesn't really start to get good until well into the Z series.

Hopefully this one is just a "pilot" movie of sorts to see if going into the Z stories for movies is worth it.

Actually, there's a very good chance it'll be a flop.

The problem with the show was that it straddled the line between a kid's show and an action show for older kids/adults. The first Dragonball (which this movie is based on) was a kid's show. Dragonball Z was more for older kids.
This movie will likely have the same problem and even if not, who will go? Kids or adults? How could anyone know what to expect? Will adults not see it because it'll likely be to silly (for kids) or will kids not go because it'll be too serious (for adults)?

The story is way to far fetched to be seen by anyone other than an original Dragonball fan. I can't see your average person watching a Dragonball trailer (no matter how great it looks) and wanting to go spend money to see it in a theater. Only someone who's already a fan will fork out the cash to go and find out if it'll be a hit or a miss.
