whats the best brand of cuban cigars?

I know some cigar people are on here

V_RocKs 04-23-2008 07:50 AM

Why Cuban? There are plenty of brands that are not Cuban that smoke MUCH BETTER.

But if you must...

A real Cohiba is nice. Should be aged a few years before being smoked. 98% of Cohibas in the USA, Mexico, Canada and Europe are fake.

Bolivar, H. Upmann, Hoyo de Monterrey, Montecristo and Partagas are all fine Cubans. However, they all have non-Cuban companies making them too. Which means the ones you see at http://www.thompsoncigar.com are not Cuban.

To get the actual Cubans (which taste remarkably like their Honduran and Nicaraguan cousins) you can go to certain web sites that actually sell Cubans. They are often based in Sweden or Hong Kong.

Expect to pay an arm and a leg. If you are getting 20 Cubans for less than $650 you are not getting Cubans. Plain and simple. You will not get a Lamborghini for $2000... Same principal.

My suggestion would be to use the URL I previously posted and get their Partagas, Padron, Rockey Patel, La Gloria Cubana or Arturo Fuente. All of which are grown in either Honduras or Nicaragua. All of them are grown from Cuban seeds (seeds that left Cuba when Castro took over). You will not perceive any difference.

All cigars should be aged before being smoked. If you smoke a $5 cigar that has been aged 5 years it will taste comparable to a $20 cigar aged 1 year.

Rocky Patel is a nice cigar to start with. The 90 and 92 series are both aged for you. So all you have to do is order them and smoke em.

only tried the Boliviar myself when staying in Guayaquil, Ecuador though, it was likely a fake ... tasted great though :)

Ah yeah, also some M thingy when staying in Paraguay but again, likely fake.

Romeo and Juliet.

You can get them in Cuba, and they are about 500 to 600 a box.

I'm a big fan of Romeo y Julietas :thumbsup

Trinidad, it's a very exclusive brand, then Cohiba, with Maduro 5 as top of the line, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, depending on each one's taste. Go get them in Cuba. If you know the right ppl, you can get them at 30% of the shop price, so you can get a box of Maduros for like 150-200 USD.

I don't know about your source, but in Cuban factories they say the tobacco leaf should be matured in special conditions, the cigar should be smoked asap. Freshness is an important atribute of a good cigar.

If you are a smoker you will soon realize that the worst cigars are.... Cubans. One of the porblems with Cuban cigars is that the quality of the leaf is not their anymore.

I brought back from Cuba, a 12 inch cigar, from the nephew of the guy who rolled the world record longest cigar... and that 12 inch cigar was the best.

Great suggestion! and very true, some of these are even better then current cuban leafs. To add to this, about four years ago, cuba had a terrible harvest, but cuban cigars kept on comming out of Cuba with no decline. The internal rumor was that the Cuban government had to go to Hunduras and import the leafs, and buy Cuban seeds inorder to replenish thier crops.

You should make a point of comming down in August to the Internext and spending some time in Little Havana. I'm sure you will find a good cigar shop, that sells dominican or hundurian leaf cigars, that rival anything out of Cuba.

I didn't know this. Had a Cohiba in the Grand Hyatt in Dubai, which to my non-expert taste was great. Was tempted to grab a box in Cyprus but didn't in the end cos they did seem a little cheap.

Also I have a Romeo y Julieta which someone gave me about 2 years ago and just havent got round to smoking. Its lying around somewhere in its metal tube.

Will this be ok still?

Depends on the humidity in that tube and the temperature it was stored at. Ideally it should have been stored in a humidor.

My source is myself and just about anyone else who stores and smokes cigars as more than just a passing fancy. A cigar stored in a humidor will still be just as fresh as the day it was placed in it. The only difference will be that the cigar will be smoother and have a creamy taste. It won't burn the insides of your mouth like a brand new Cohiba will.

Cigars are not like cigarettes. They get better with age.

Well it has been at room temp in my apartment for most of it. As for humidity, I have no fucking idea. I guess I'll know if its fucked when I light up...

JP-pornshooter 04-23-2008 11:29 AM

davidhoff (or zino) makes a good cigar, and also great cognac. i am pretty sure they also make a cuban cigar tho the ones i buy in US are not from cuba..obviously.
imho the only really good about a cuban cigar, perhaps one issue it rivals its competitors is the roll..they are infact handrolled which gives the cigar a perfect draw and even burn.
btw, does anyone have experience buying cigars online? this looks like a good deal:

V_RocKs 04-23-2008 11:43 AM

Those are a nice deal.

All of the cigars from the companies previously mentioned in this thread are hand rolled. Cuban or not.

PARTAGAS 898 :thumbsup

madfuck 04-23-2008 01:46 PM

tht shits hella gross "( who wants to kiss tht..........sorry not me

Jimmy Rock 04-23-2008 01:47 PM

their illigal, i'm not allowed to smoke them.

Burnt Bacon 04-23-2008 02:12 PM

Partagas are my absolute favourites. Serie D, in particular. Romeo y Julieta's are also a fine choice, and preferable when I desire something a little lighter. Cohiba's are the name, and pack a nice smooth punch, but I've never found the extra money to be worth it.

Viva Partagas!

spideriux 04-23-2008 02:26 PM

Cohibas of course :)

Well when it comes to cigars, prior to this biz had a cigar shop in Malibu Ca....provided some of the very best cigars to most of Hollywood's elite and the tragic rich...lol

So the real question when its asked "what is the best cigar in the world" .........there is a simple answer is... the one in your mouth lit when the question is asked.

So many brands, so many types, fake real, b-grade, copies , etc etc.......

Saying Cuban cigars "are not good" is like saying smoking the Chronic is no good :) Or all French Wine is not any good... When you get a good one, there is nothing else like it. YOU MUST know who you are buying your stuff from, we have a person for the past 7 years is always right on the money!

If you like hit me up on icq for that web addy, i can set you up so you not only dont pay retail, but you will always get the very best smoke always!

Mike Hawk for Ditka Cigar Carrier of the Year?

Ycaza 04-24-2008 12:18 AM

Lesson 1 on fake cuban cigars

NO CUBAN CIGAR IS WRAPPED IN CELLOPHANE. EVER!

as for me My day cigar is always a partagas series D #4

I am by nature a robusto smoker so cohiba robustos, RJ short churchills Monte edmundos etc are my favorites, If I got a while A series P2 or Monte 2 is a good one. Davidoff no longer makes Cubans but the ones they used to make, The Dom Perignon was a motherfucker of a smoke.

http://www.stupidcoeds.com/gfy/cohibas.jpg

V_RocKs 04-24-2008 03:51 AM

Cubans don't use cellophane for the same reason you love Cubans. Their process is the exact same process as it has been for 100 years. The bands might change with the times.. Boxes to thwart counterfeiting... but that is about it.

fris 04-24-2008 05:41 AM

any idea where i can get some cohibas that are real?

I get the romeos in Cuba, and have never found a better leaf than what comes from cuba.

as for the bad year, they had plenty. just not what they normally have, and they have tons of seed for planting.

Spend some time there. Its a great place with a great leaf.

Twistys Tim 05-09-2008 02:01 PM

I very much like La Aurora Preferidos with the Maduro wrapper.

With a nice glass of Port on a summer evening -- this is very nice :)

Try Craigslist..be very careful of the fakes.always make sure they box has a date code on the bottom.the fakes don't.I always run ads for people going to Cuba and they bring back 2 boxes for me.It's also quite the black market down there too,so make sure they are purchased from government stores
I have 6 humidors with legit Cohiba Esplendidos,Robustos and Siglo 2's
I also have many other Montecristo, Romeo and Julieta.Aging does make a difference and they should be kept at 70% humidity in your humidor
