Food is becoming a world wide issue for panic. Corn, Wheat and rice are all dramatically up and there have been food riots in more than one country.

Part of the reason for the corn spike is Ethanol production apparently.....

"?It takes around 400 pounds of corn to make 25 gallons of ethanol..."

Only about 5% of the corn crop is used to produce ethanol so it's effects are negligible but it makes for a good story.

The article says the number is 30% which would be substantial. This could be an inflated figure just to sensationalize things or get a specific agenda across. Hard to say......

"An estimated 30% of America?s corn crop now goes to fuel, not food."

themonk 04-26-2008 10:48 AM

So we can expect a new war within the next 4-5 years, this time not because of chemical weapons (oil) but because of chemical weapons (rise)
Funny is that many farmers in the EU get extra ? from EU to leave their fields without crop because production is too high.

Who's estimate is that?

I'm not going to dig it up but in the Potash corp conference call last week they discussed the run up in prices for various crops. The CEO mentioned that only 5% of the current corn crop is being used as feed stock for the production of ethanol and banning it's use would only have a minor effect on the current price. He attributed the majority of the price increases to a growing middle class in China, India and others and their increasing protein intake hence the need for more corn to feed the chickens, cows, pigs and such.

GrouchyAdmin 04-26-2008 01:00 PM

Paulite discovered.

payd2purv 04-26-2008 01:34 PM

It has been said over and over again that the decrease in rice is because of the increase in people growing corn for fuel... this is real..

Also apparently they had bad crops last year..

People are rioting for food because they have none because they can't afford it because the cost in transporting the food is too expensive because of the cost of oil.

If they would just cut the cost of oil and find a better source of fuel not corn....

It seems soo easy :)

payd2purv 04-26-2008 01:35 PM

Also I think Russia plans to start selling the US oil.. Dunno the timeline on this or if it will actually happen but...

RUSSIA SELLING US OIL!

Russias economy is SOARING compared to the US economy..

it's fucked up..

farkedup 04-26-2008 02:57 PM

the funny thing is corn makes very shitty gas which not only is less efficient but is harder on your engine YAY! end up getting less miles per DOLLAR all while long term hurting your engine.

vending_machine 04-26-2008 03:09 PM

Yeah, let's hoard food and make it even harder for 3rd world countries to survive.

restaurants investments wont when rice is a primary staple :(

tony286 04-26-2008 10:58 PM

went to panara and they had a sign they had to raise all their prices to cover rise in food costs. It all goes back to oil especially when you consider all the trucks that move the food around use diesel fuel which is the most expensive.
