why do so many webmaster don't know what a toplist is and how it works ?!

90% of the idiots that join my toplists don't place a link on their website, then email me saying: "Hey! I submitted my site to your site, why didn't you list it ?!"
I refer them a page explaining what a toplist is, they put a link up for 2 days at the bottom of their link page, which sends over 0 hits and then they remove it from their links page.
they email me again saying: "HEY!! I inserted your banner on my page but I still don't appear in your toplist ! YOUR A CHEATER !"

but most of them don't even understand the concept that they have to send traffic in order to receive some back.
fucking morons

sandman! 04-29-2008 01:04 PM

plenty of idiots out there like that.

notoldschool 04-29-2008 01:43 PM

Because they are outdated traffic sources.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with NOS. Most webmasters were not around in 1999 so they are not familiar with them.

I agree that most toplists are not good traffic sources any more but the concept of traffic being counted from one site to another is something ANY traffic trading system is based on, including all those that are used by TGP's and CJ etc. like arrow trader, TTT etc. etc.

I would venture to say there are even more webmasters that have no idea what a CJ is, or how to set up a traffic trade script.

Hell, I would have to get help setting one up. Fact is, I never really saw the value in redirecting a surfer from where he was trying to get.

I know people made bank with it, but I never really "got it."

Just a quick clarification, using a trade script doesn't require that you skim your surfers. I run a couple of "noskim" sites that have the trade script ranked by trade quality rather than volume, which preserves the idea that a trade script is intended to maximise growth based on who generates the most clicks.

I almost feel like it's 8 years ago. :D

Because... you could have posted that 8 years ago and it would have been just as true then.

The toplist may be somewhat outdated but to my way of thinking traffic is traffic, and there are still some good targeted toplists out there that send very good ongoing hits. They are on autopilot so it's traffic that almost never goes away, it's reliable.

They're like scripted link lists, I doubt they'll ever go away completely. And I'm okay with that.

MRock 04-29-2008 02:28 PM

First of all I would state that I agree that toplist traffic has gone to shit. No one seems to use them any more. As far as the idiots ... that's why I run my toplist as a "closed" system. I only allow my own membership sites ( and affiliate programs) to bleed over to it.

Show the surfer what YOU have to sell first, then allow them to go to a toplist. That's not, in my view, redirecting the surfer. On average, you get 3 or more back per hit sent.

you beat me to it.
skiming is a choice , you can use a traffic system with not skiming at all and rank trade by clicks or traffic productivity, and there you have a toplist that actually keeps itself quality.
you can also set a productivity minimum and a productivity maximum (it's an anticheat method)...

but that's kinda off topic
