Biz Thread: Take a Tip and Leave a Tip!

I thought today might be a good day to start biz thread, so post a tip that has helped build traffic or improved your business and then maybe learn something from others.

My tip: Always add Google Analytics to your sites.

About 2-3mo. ago I was building a new freesite, brand new domain, no traffic going to it and wasn't linked anywhere on the net. I took me about a week and half to build it, because of my other responsibilities and such, however I had added Google Analytics to the site on like day 3or4, because I always like using it to track a website's traffic and knew that once it launched it would be a good tool to have on it. So about a week or so later I launched it, the next next day I logged in to see how day1 went, only to discover that I had been getting some google traffic for like 5 days and Google Analytics was the only way Google could have known about this site. It wasn't a windfall of traffic, but it did show me that adding it to a site is great way to get google to index your site.

halfpint 04-30-2008 11:14 AM

Yep also by opening a google webmaster account gets your sites indexed pretty quick

WiredGuy 04-30-2008 11:21 AM

I would say its more likely you had Google toolbar installed and that's how Google found it over analytics. Just a hunch though.

Thanks l lost $200 on your tip it came 3rd :(

My tip.

At least 15 percent of google adword clicks are fraud and l have the data to prove it so dont over spend on the click amount without considering this.

DomP_nl 04-30-2008 01:42 PM

my tip....

Run for the hills while you can !

Sly 04-30-2008 01:45 PM

Pushing "money now" strategies is good and nice... but plan for next year and the year after and the year after a while you plan for today. If you do things right, every year will stack up on top of each other and this year's income will be peanuts to tomorrow.

Great things are not easy and fast. If they were, they would not be great.

Just saying, every url you hit with that toolbar they know about and I've had similiar results and never used analytics. So my guess would be its the toolbar that's secretly sharing your commonly visited urls with Big Brother, I mean Google, lol.

Link building is more than just trading links. Press releases and blogs are great for that.

It's easier to retain a customer then get a new one. Underpromise and over deliver. Be aware of your limitations, make sure your customers expectations are within your abillity to fufill.

agreed! also the google webmasters tools are very good, i'd add always use the meta verification process when you submit in there and also submit a sitemap in the webmasters area (logically forces them to examine it for errors)...i usually make 2 sitemaps one with the intent to get feedback on errors and one clean one, after getting error results, i dump in the correct/fixed one back in

Remember to use both alt and title tags on images. Remember to ask for link title tag when trading links (many don't bother with this).

Build it and they will come.

Says the guy with no tips.

My tip: sometimes "tips" tell you the opposite of the truth.

Elli 02-08-2009 03:18 PM

Great idea for a thread!

Always sort your whites from your darks before doing your laundry.

And for business:
Start your day with a checklist of reasonable tasks for the day. Once your checklist is done, then you can work on extra projects. Re-evaluate the list weekly to make sure you're allocating enough time to each task.

here is my tip

stop advertising on facebook, it has a 90% failure rate for advertising

scottybuzz 02-08-2009 05:20 PM

Heres my tip. Leave a tip to designers/programmers etc. They will be happy and in experience will produce a higher standard of work for the next piece you ask for. Only has to be 5-10% but well worth it.

fris 02-08-2009 05:22 PM

My tip: You worked hard on getting your surfers to visit. Install email collection or squeeze pages to maintain a conversation with them. Email them regrading updates and their comments on how to improve your site.

My tip 2: Build your site around your surfers. Read your stats and see which pages get the most love from your surfers. Replicate those pages on your site and ask your surfers re which elements work. Make them your partner in creating a better site that speaks to your surfers, is more viral, and converts better.

Now for my countering of the initial tip:

NEVER use Google Analytics or Webmaster Tools. Don't make it easy for the fucks to know how you make your money. You never know whom they'll sell your info to. :Graucho

Word... Analytics only goes on "certain" sites.. But definitely not all of them.
