Looks like quite a few hosts can match the $800 a month for 100mbps. How about 250mbps, 500, and 1000. Guys there are lots of people looking for hi bw server deals, instead of posting your contact info here just post what prices you can do here.

Yeah that's what im thinking, but we will see. I did notice the absence of posts from the normal guys who dont hesitate to post in a hosting thread LOL. I guess this offer just shut them all up.

Best deal??

Phil21 05-21-2008 11:02 PM

I'd be willing to match the AR deal. This is for a full dedicated gige port to the server.

Server specs would be better.

Dual Quad Core Xeon / 4GB RAM / 6x73GB 15k SAS (RAID5, RAID10, whatever mix in between if you want to split stuff). If you prefer, can swap out the disks for SATA 250GB instead (1.25TB RAID5 or 750GB RAID10 useable space). This is also in a server with hotswap power supplies from redundant power feeds, and hotswap disk. (Dell PE2950)

For those watching...

There is a *huge* difference between selling a server + port speed, than selling servers, and a metered amount of bandwidth. $5,000 for a 1Gbit port is not even close to the same as $5/mbit.

Willing to do a few of these to experiment.. might be interesting.

so basically any existing customers are fucked huh?

i always think its hilarious when hosts do that :1orglaugh

reminds me of the cold call in "boiler room" from the newspaper salesman

Good point on metered bandwidth. I've noticed alot of people don't realize that when they see an offer for a 100mbps server, they're never going to be able to use all 100mbps.
They just see 100mbps for say $800 and "think" that's $8 per meg.

If you care about your site's speed and performance then you'll only be able to use about 70% of a capped line. (This is based on my past experience with 10mb capped lines, when I could only do 7 megs consistently before running into problems)

Ask the same host for the price on a burstable line, and it's going to increase 20-30% or more.

Regarding the alphared deal, that's a sick price....but my understanding is that their servers aren't managed and there's alot of cogent bandwidth in that mix. (if not all cogent at that price)
So while it is a sick deal, you can't really compare that to the average webmaster who needs 1gbps of bandwidth, because 95% of those guys are going to need a server cluster (not just 1 server) and alot of tech support.

cardinalvices 05-22-2008 01:48 AM

Sorry, I don't get it, 100mbps is not so rare, try www.jaservers.net they offer it for under $1000 easy, and fully managed.

Phil21 05-22-2008 09:33 AM

Snake Doctor makes some good points. AR and the like are generally pretty "bare bones" providers. There is nothing wrong with this, if you know that getting into the deal and understand what that means. It seems a lot of folks do not, and expect the world for what they pay.

My offer to match the gige pricing (plus provide a rather high-end server) would of course be unmanaged. However, it would still be our premium bandwidth.

For someone who happens to have a small content set that pulls a ton of bandwidth - these deals make a lot of sense. For those who have more traditional needs, they will find "standard hosting" to be pretty competitive in the "total dollars spent" category.
