DOes anyone know if Towing your car is bad for it

i got my car towed 35 KM yesterday, cant that fuck up my suspension and frame?

Eriic 05-18-2008 12:14 PM

It fucked up my rear suspension

They towed with the gear in reverse

IntenseJerry 05-18-2008 12:14 PM

As long as it was towed properly, you are ok.

Spunky 05-18-2008 12:15 PM

Shouldn't be a problem.I have mine towed a few times over the years and no issues

baddog 05-18-2008 12:19 PM

How did you tow it and what kind of car?

It could mess with the drive train if not done properly, but should not effect the suspension or frame.

F-U-Jimmy 05-18-2008 12:19 PM

If you tow it by the wing mirrors or exhaust pipe its not so good :error

if its awd, you need to flat deck it. If its rwd, you tow it backwards. If its fwd then you tow it forwards regularly. As long as this part was done properly, it should be fine outside of possible scratches from magnetic tail lights and signals and whatnot.

This is correct for automatic transmissions,

The reason is so your "drive wheels" do not spin the drive shaft or trans-axles. If you do this on an automatic transmission it could damage the torque converter without the engine running because transmission hydraulic fluid is not being circulated.

With a standard transmission you should be fine.

Just remembered a trick, if it's a RWD you can always disconnect the drive shaft at the rear and tie it up. If you slide it out of the yoke instead of taking it off it's probably going to leak ATF.

If its an automatic, dont forget to put it out of park. Some friend of mine has his limo towed because he was parked somewhere silly. He couldnt work for a while because it was hard to get parts for that car here.

better to flatbed your car if you're worried..

Stallion 05-18-2008 03:01 PM

Depends on how they tow it and if the guy towing it really gives a crap. It can mess it up if not done properly. I agree best method if flatbed.

agreed. if they are not flat bedding it, it is very possible for them to hook it wrong

Vendzilla 05-18-2008 04:33 PM

thats why some cars are better for towing behind motorhomes

I was about to say that ;) its surprisingly easy to disconnect them.... but can be a bitch to reconnect... at least on my '68 mustang it was a bitch when I put in a new rear axle...

Putting things together is always harder than taking them apart.

Maye not always.

I could, for instance, make a block of concrete with less effort than it would take you to take apart. :)

the TOW DRIVER put my car on dollys'

so i guess thats similar to flatbed since no wheels are turning
