Sitting All Day

Working at my computer all day - like everyone else here - I find that my calves get VERY stiff when sitting in one place for more than 45 minutes.

It takes some good walking around afterwards to get to the point they were at before.

Does this happen to anyone else and anyone know why? Or maybe your back gets sore/stiff.

I have tried numerous "ergonomic" chairs but the best is a $14.99 folding chair (the type they use for seminars at hotels).

What are your experiences from sitting for long periods?

your best bet on keeping your back and body healthy after sitting allday is to incorporate a walk of at least 45 minutes a day into your routine

or some other form of excercise....at this point im taking it serious

i dont want back issues when im older..or to start getting weak etc

You can have a chair made out of a cloud that Jesus himself sent you....If you sit on it all day, you're screwed....

Just last year, I used to sit so much at my computer that my hips would actually lock up....Have you ever had a hip lock up? You don't want it....If it's bad enough, you won't be able to even sit up in bed, much less walk....

Now I get off of my lazy ass and hit the spa damn near every day and some of those days includes Yoga.....What you need is to get to a Yoga class IMMEDIATELY....You'll notice a difference after the first class.

Walk for 5 minutes after every hour. My teacher was told by the doctor when he got severe backbone problem.

I try to stand-up every hour, go to kitchen, see out of the window etc etc.

i asked him if i could have it and i have loved it ever since the first time i used it.
usually at the end of the day my calves would feel full and heavy but when i use this my calves feel really loose and good.

Take more breaks and walk around

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I will be getting up every hour even though I hate to leave a section of work unfinished. I feel like I'm in the zone and focused and don't want to get up. No big deal really though. And I do go to the gym 3 times per week.

BTW, that Jesus chair ... do they have an affiliate program?

:)

I switch over to a giant inflatable excercize ball about 50% of the time, it helps a lot. You can keep cranking but also kind of swivel your hips around while you work.

Squats should do the trick ...

I spend almost the intire day sat in front of the computer.
It really sucks when all your body starts hurting.
The things is walking for some minutes every day!

tranza 05-29-2008 08:26 AM

I stay sitting 8 hours for day basicly!

Pick up dancing, martial arts or yoga. My back started hurting recently after spending last 10 years in front of the computer and not exercising. I'm taking this shit really seriously now, wish I did earlier. Right now I do stretching several times a day and martial arts 3 times a week, seems to be helping a bit.

Violetta 05-29-2008 09:01 AM

work out more...

Besides taking a short break every hour, the exercise ball is a nifty trick. By sitting on it you are actually strengthening your core too :thumbsup

I agree....

I went to Yoga class this morning and even though I'm recovering over an illness and didn't feel like going, I feel a LOT better now that I am finished....I did the yoga and went straight to the whirlpool...then sauna and steamroom.....

Now I can sit here on my ass until tomorrow without a care in the world....My body is stretched out and my muscles are getting stronger.....
