Does Dell make good computers?

I'm considering buying a Dell Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and was just wondering what people think of Dell as I have never owned one. I am either going with this or one built by my local PC shop. One downside to the Dell is that i can only get Vista on it whereas the built ones i can get XP. Anyways, i just want to know how well Dell systems stand up.

Boobs 05-28-2008 06:07 PM

been using dell since 1999 and love it. the product is great

Spunky 05-28-2008 06:08 PM

They have great products, not too sure about their support though

Pleasurepays 05-28-2008 06:10 PM

yeah.. they are so good that the new york attorney general was forced to create a hotline just to take complaints about dell this month.

Sounds like the Dimension 6100. I got one of those. Vista sucks, but they do have XP drivers; however, slipstreaming the onboard is kind of a bitch with this model, and I can't remember why.

Dell products are solid for the price, as is the support (never tried Dell Home, and I wouldn't suggest it). I haven't 'home-built' a computer for myself since 2003, and don't think I ever will, again.

I've used nothing but Dell now for years. I have nothing but good things to say about their computers. Their support has slacked a little bit since it's either India or South America. But what company doesn't use a third world country for support nowadays?

tony286 05-28-2008 06:26 PM

when I worked in corp america we used them and they were fine.Never had a problem.

I love dells when they have coupons and shit. Personally I watch slickdeals and if they have a truly great offer I'll bite. I kind of wish I'd have just picked up my Q6600 system from them because by time I bought all the parts and put it together I'm OVER what dell would have charged to BUILD it for me. Obviously I have higher quality RAM, overclocking options, hard drives in RAID etc BUT I could have popped in some RAM and a SATA RAID card and been set.

Award winning service.

Dell is quickly becoming Cuomo's bitch.

I was a bit worried about the quad cores being so power hungry and hot.

I left mine on for a week while recovering data from severely fried medium. I got most of it back, and the machine, although unhappy, didn't have a problem with ambient temps of 100f.

I now have a dell desktop and laptop here, and both seem really good. Had them about 4 months. Only issue so far is the laptop has a dead pixel in the screen. When I asked Dell about getting it fixed, they said a single pixel does not fall under warranty coverage.

In before GFY tells you to drop it a few times.

If you massage around it, it can usually fix them. My Inspiron 6400 came with two dead pixels, and I was pissed. I took a soft cloth, rubbed around it, and at the edges of either side (down towards the plastic), and eventually 'rubbed out' the defect.

WiredGuy 05-28-2008 09:42 PM

I love my Dell's, I've bought at least a dozen over the years and don't regret a single one of them. Make sure you get their onsite warranties, they're worth every penny.

The Quad Cores are very power efficient compared to previous generations of processors. Realize that when idle they're exceptionally efficient. Yes, Dell makes great systems. I've been buying their desktops and laptops since around 1999 and the last few years I have added around 500 of their servers and am very pleased.

:)

No problem with my Dells for a couple of years now.

brandonstills 05-29-2008 12:00 AM

Just make sure you know what you are getting. They were recently found guilty of defrauding customers.

Ross 05-29-2008 02:38 AM

I have 4 dell computers in my office, won't buy anything else.

Sebring Studios 05-29-2008 04:30 AM

No complaints here, have two and will buy again. Don't know about their support though, never had to use them.

StaceyJo 05-29-2008 04:37 AM

Well I guess they make good products bec. the name of the company is very "IN and demand" in the market and most of the people also patronize their products. So I guess it is.

BlackCrayon 05-29-2008 12:38 PM

Thanks for all the replies. Do a lot of programs not work with vista? I still use some pretty old programs some even from windows 95/98 days. Will most of those still work?

fisheyecore 05-29-2008 12:41 PM

dell is ok :thumbsup
