Tore 2 Ligaments in my ankle... any1 do this? how long to recover....

just curious if anyone here fractured their ankle and tore the 2 ligaments associated with it? if so, how long were u in pain for? How long did the "my foot is on fire" feeling last for? How long did it take to recover????

PS: i forgot to say, OUCH!!!!!

Imortyl Pussycat 05-29-2008 01:19 PM

I tore 2 ligaments on my ankle once too. It took me a month, with physiotherapy, to be up and running.

wyldblyss 05-29-2008 01:29 PM

My daughter and I both tore ours within a few weeks of each other. Been about 3 years now, both of us still have problems with the ankle we injured.

oh man, i wish i had a cool story to tell you all, maybe a bar fight and i did a roundhouse kick to someones face but the truth is, i was walking down the steps in Penn Station in NYC to get to my subway and the very last step, as i stepped onto the platform, i put my left foot down and it rolled. The ankle like popped out and back in. Thank god i was actually holding the railing for the 2X a year i actually hold it, and i did not fall. I do have weak ankle from playing soccer since the age of 5 on through my college career. Have suffered quite a few ankle injuries from the sport but never had something this severe and so painful.

I can barely wiggle my toes. This happened 10 days ago and my foots is still very swollen, black n blue and yellowish, and in pain. Very hard to fall asleep at nite with this pain.

using crutches and i am in a aircast. Keeping it elevated a lot to and ice throughout the day....

oh yeah, OUCH!!!!!! the worst part is, i stopped seeing this chic and now i dont even have anyone to offer me in home nurse care : (

jeffrey 05-29-2008 02:46 PM

4-6 weeks with physio till you can walk and do normal stuff, but anything hard on your ankle will hurt like a mofo. I injured my ankle last summer quading and its still not right, after tennis or squash my foot hardly fits in my shoe and its tender the next day or two.
It all depends on what ligaments you tore

Supz 05-29-2008 02:55 PM

any ligament problems usually last a while. especially if its full torn, then you are fucked

Persius 05-29-2008 02:56 PM

6 weeks atleast

d-null 05-29-2008 05:38 PM

6 months at least before you will start to forget about the injury, and even then you better be damn careful with it for a couple years

Quoted for truth.

And once you feel good enough for "sports", wear an ankle wrap / support / brace while doing it, or you will more than likely hurt it again and it WILL take even longer to heal.

Broken bones are mere annoyances compared to severe sprains / ligament damage.

my best buddy is almost a year out on his broken ankle, he had 4 screws and 2 plates put in and went through PT for several months...
he's a ton better but still gets sore from standing too long.
hopefully you will heal up with the quickness! good luck!

PurrrsianPussyKat 05-29-2008 07:05 PM

I broke my ankle and tore all the ligaments. It's been almost 3 yrs and it still hurts.

Best of luck.

Spunky 05-29-2008 07:16 PM

i didn't get as bad as you and i am just now able to exercise. mine happened on new year's eve. be prepared to sit on your ass with your laptop for months :( you will be able to hobble alright in 2 months and probably stop having to baby it hard core at 4 months but don't plan to exercise other than stretching when the dr. says you can for nearly 6 months. i am not looking my svelt self either and i have only a few weeks to be bikini ready for xbiz :Oh crap

oh man... sorry about that. if it makes u feel any better, if i had a good ankle, id do a roundhouse kick to his brains...

Chauncy 05-30-2008 07:42 AM

well I ruptured two ligaments in my ankle 14 years ago and it still isn't right but I was in a cast for 6 months so I figure you will be at least that long for it to heal but your ankle will always fuck with you its much like a knee and back injury they last forever

Mefo 05-30-2008 07:44 AM

Happened to me 5 times (seriously) and it takes around 6 weeks to get you going again

btw after it happened the first time it kept comming back take as much time as you can because they will be weak forever.... one weird move and it can happen again

WOW!!!! thats exactly what mine looks like... i am assuming you rolled it over and it felt like a POP...

OH MAN!!! 6 weeks is going to be brutal.

I am doing the RICE technique and i have a physical therapist coming over to do some electronic stimulation thing he sold me on... lol i need to cut the recovery time in half... this was suppose to be the SUMMER OF IAN

LilBro 05-30-2008 08:17 AM

i dont knwo why but when i lay in bed at nite to go to sleep the pain intensifies by like 1000%.... and forces me to take Vicodin : (

Summer of Ian is slipping away : (

very chivalrous of you but it's all good, he just wasn't feelin it. after all, i am a handful.

ManuelX 05-30-2008 08:50 AM

Same thing happened to me, it took me about 6 months for it to be in good shape again, because I did not rest it, dont walk around too much for the next 2-3 weeks, otherwise it will take much longer to heal.:2 cents::2 cents:

CDSmith 05-30-2008 08:56 AM

Simply put... just stay the fuck off it for as long as it takes (and quit yer bitchin about it).

The more you walk on it, play softball on it, fuck with it etc, the longer the problems will persist with it. Or you can wrap it up with a tensor every day, rub it down every night, stay OFF it as much as possible, and in 6 weeks or so you're good to go for every day walking, but I'd still give it longer for sports.

Btw, as far as your "six pack" goes, uh dude, you can still do crunches and situps with a boned up ankle.

CDSmith 05-30-2008 09:03 AM

Btw, I've broken both ankles at different times playing hockey, I sure know the drill. The good news is neither one bothers me at all since. (one happed when I was 10, the other at 14, I'm 45 now)

Play it smart and you'll still have the tail end of July and ALL of August to have your "summer of Ian"

V_RocKs 05-30-2008 09:05 AM

7 days......

Kudles 05-30-2008 09:08 AM

My boyfriend got into a motorcycle accident and did the same thing to his ankle, that was 3 years ago and he is still in some pain. It just doesn't heal right and you probably will get bad arthritis. Hope you feel better.

IntenseJerry 05-30-2008 09:23 AM

Sorry to hear that. I was a paramedic for 8 years and I saw a lot of injuries like that. Definately see a specialist right away, if it's a tear it could need surgury. I know you didn't want to hear that but if it needs it, it's best to get it done sooner than later. That is still pretty swollen after 10 days. Definately keep weight off it and sleep with it elavated. You could take motrin for the pain, especially at night.

Good Luck Dude... J

I agree, even longer if surgery is needed with rehab. Hang in there...J

Pornwolf 05-30-2008 09:48 AM

Bones are easy to heal.

Torn muscle is easy to heal.

Ligaments, on the other hand, are delicate as shit. Stay off of it. Period. If you treat it right you can heal in 8 weeks. If you are even slightly negligent you can expect 6 months before the nagging pain goes away if ever.

Just get the best brace/wrap money can buy and treat it well.

i saw the orthopedist... not complete tears. wants me to stay in the air cast for 4 weeks and then he gave me this ace bandage type sock as well to wear. He said i can buy it in a under armour material for sports to prevent sweating when i go out. he also said it should be 6 to 8 weeks till i can get back into the swing of things except for jiu jitsu and running, to much stress on the ankle.... "summer of ian" is on hold...

thanks for al the info and advice everyone, i realy appreciate it especially since i am stubborn and will try to cut my recovery time somewhat if i can... maybe ill try accupuncture lol

thanks again!

dig420 05-30-2008 10:36 AM

I tore all three of mine doing BJJ, and it will NEVER be the same. I'm supposed to do physical therapy with rubber bands for the rest of my life to strengthen all the other little muscles in compensation.

Yep,

like someone else already said, ligaments (and tendons) are a veritable bitch to heal. You don't "be stubborn and try to cut my recovery time if I can". You sit your ass down and you HEAL for as long as it takes, period.

I hate to say it but I think this LilBro guy is in for a hard lesson that might affect him a loooong time.
