Can someone explain this?
I went to the little market by my place today and bought some eggs. Some woman brings them in and sells them fresh to the market so they are truly from the farm, this woman isn't running a huge operation that is for sure. These eggs are huge, twice the size of any eggs I have seen before. I boiled four of them tonight to eat and when I was taking out the yolk, each one of them had two yolks inside. Is this normal for range chickens to lay eggs with two yolks? Someone please explain this to me please.
they ALL had two yolks? 2 of em means twins, and I once had an egg like that cooking me some breakfast, but having 2 yolks in ALL your eggs, plus they are way huge to begin with, something is up.
oh yea... did you eat them?
Yep, it's a lot more common with Free Range hens. In my local supermarkets you can buy actual boxes of Free Range Double Yolk eggs.... cost a bit more though.
I was raised on a farm and we got those double yoke eggs all of the time. No biggie. Just eat them :)
Yes, all four of them had two yolks in them. I can see one as a fluke but all four? WTF
You're not supposed to eat those ones. They are bad for you.
Thank Lord, that your own eggs do not have two or more yolks :1orglaugh , but how do you think, is it possible ??? Try to find out... Do not forget to inform us about the result fo your genetical research :-)

Yeah.... double yolks are pretty popular. Over here (UK) you can buy them at most of the Sainsbury's , Tescos and Asda (Wal Mart to you guys) supermarkets.
Is it a special breed of chicken that lays them or is it simply by chance?

Schwick
I'm not a farmer... but I'm pretty sure it only happens with Free Range chickens because unlike couped hens, their feed and enviroment are different. It's fairly common mate. |
So if these eggs were fertilized, say by Boneprone for example, when it hatched would there be twin chickens?
hmmm tricky one...
Again, I'm not a farmer.... I just eat them... same goes for chickens. An educated guess here is no.... the egg would not hatch into twins and I'm sure it would not even hatch producing a single chicken for some reason which I can't think of right now. |

I was never a big egg eater. Something about eating unborn chicken embryos kind of disturbs me.
