Yes, it's all simply based on Alexa data, which as we all know, doesn't really mean a damn thing. It tells us nothing about the quality of a site, how well a site is converting, etc.

I'm sure the Alexa data can be subject to many factors, including the example you gave above. Overall though, it's still the best we've got for trying to estimate traffic patterns.

I've found it quite useful though to determine certain patterns, ie, which niches seem to be garnering a lot of traffic lately.

Obviously a 'Top 10' list like this should be taken with a grain of salt, just as a Top 10 list for most subjective things should be.

Still though, if your Alexa e-penis has one of the largest increases out of all the porn sites on the web, you're probably doing something right.

I run the hosted galleries on the same domain...and it does still show the interest in a site. The hosted gallery is part of the site after all and eyeballs are being laid upon it. One way or the other it's being branded and viewed. Whether it's someone looking at picture on a gallery or looking at a picture on a tour...it's all advertising until they actually go to the join page.
After all...if a million people see a t.v. ad in an hour (analoagous to the hosted gallery), but only 1000 people go to the store and see the product sitting on the shelf (analogous to the tour) doesn't it still serve it's purpose either way?
After all the tour is just an advertisement as is the gallery/banner/etc.
So that being said...I do think that Alexa is a good tool for determining the reach of your website. Just makes it hard for the people who use content servers to make the same determination.
Anyway, that's how I see it.

Shrug I just think in this case it doesn't apply... You can use Alexa to compare, for example, one tgp to another because they are equal in terms of traffic generation and site navigation and stuff... If you're comparing one paysite that hosts their galleries on a seperate domain to another paysite that hosts the galleries on the same domain, and saying that the latter paysite is bigger according to the Alexa data, that's false.

Just an observation. If two paysites each get 100k gallery hits a day, and 10k tour hits a day, but one hosts their galleries elsewhere, the results would be similar to comparing a 110k/day tgp to a 10k/day tgp.

Yep, that's why the compare thing is just for pissing rights. :) But if you do run your galleries on the same domain then the information does give you one perspective on your sites traffic. And then of course you can always just look at the server stats. LOL

TrafficCashGold fhg's for example are hosted on multiple domains that you can choose; example: wannawatch.com

fuzebox wasn't talking about that. He was referring to HOSTED GALLERIES being on the same domain as the parent site. A lot of sites moved their galleries to other domains years ago because all the traffic to the galleries would slow down the paysite itself. It was and is a great idea.
But these days with much faster internet speeds and greater bandwidth...not to mention kickass servers with much bigger processors, that isn't always needed.
For instance, I'm able to run the tour, members area, AND hosted galleries...and even run a live webcam show all from the same server without even coming close to nudging the needle on the CPU or my bandwidth pipe. Couldn't done that a few years ago, but technology moves forward.
What fuzebox is pointing out is that all the traffic going to the galleries gives a false impression of the websites popularity.
My view is that it gives a true impression of the websites popularity because whether it's a tour or a gallery it's all just advertising and branding in an attempt to get a person to the join page and afterwards a sale.
fuzebox is pointing out that a site (like claudia-marie.com that I own) that uses hosted galleries on the domain will have a higher alexa ranking than a site that uses a seperate server and domain for their galleries.
So he and I are seeing the advertising and/or branding from a differnent viewpoint and the alexa ratings from a different usefullness.
We both agree that the "compare" doesn't really hold water when comparing the apples and oranges that scenario brings to the table.
Though in all fairness, even tgp's can't be truly "compared" by Alexa.
Some pages, like SleazyDream are just that...a page with paid placement. Others like Freeones are huge beasts with thousands of pages. Others like my Grampland.Com have lots of pages and, in my case, a legal tube that is on a sub-domain. And I am unclear on whether Alexa sees a sub-domain as part of the domain itself.
So you can see that the differing websites all have different variables.
That's why the "compare" isn't really worth much except that it feels cool to say: "My ranking is higher than your ranking" lol
But the alexa info IS very useful if you just use it within the context of your own websites performance. But no, it might not be as "useful" for the people who are wondering if a particular website's advertising rates are "worth it" or not.
But then again...people used Sex Tracker for years to make that decision. And ~NEWSFLASH~ back in the day those stats might have been a little...shall we say "manipulated" at times. :winkwink:
So at least the Alexa stats are "honest" even if they aren't absolutley precise.

I should point out that the way I have the Alexa data presented now, is to show the largest *percentage increase* in Alexa ranking for the past 7 days. (Although I do plan to make it sortable by overall Alexa ranking in the future)

I thought this might make it a little more fair, so that 'up and coming' sites are given a fair chance to be near the top of the list.

The goal, for me, was to use the data to determine the 'hottest' sites, for each particular niche. Of course I'm always open to suggestions or ideas of what to do with the data.
