Kimbo Slice fight question for MMA fans

Ok.

So that guys ear was fucked up, clearly.

It was so fucked up, that even before the fight started, it was floppy, almost detached from the inside it looked like. Never seen one so bad.

So A> What the fuck causes this? Is it something they get over time, and it just gets worse, or was it one gym incident, and needs time to go away or what?

B> Was it the right stoppage in this fight? Could he have safely continued?

It was a serious case of Cauliflower ear common among fighters and wrestlers. Its caused by your ear being a punching bag. You need to drain it and it usually involves cosmetic surgery to fix, but fighters wear it with pride.

Kimbo lost the fight in second, only ref didn't recognize it and allowed it to go until Kimbo was given a chance to recover. Colossus on the other hand has had bad luck with refs unfairly ending fights prematurely in his opponents favor. In fight against Butterbeam, it seemed just s though the ref made a bad decision to end the fight early. In fight with Kimbo, that was so rigged it's not even funny.

Socks 06-03-2008 11:51 PM

Yeah in any other fight it would have been stopped, I'm pretty sure the ref was given strict instructions to not stop it unless it was absolutely necessary. Seems like CBS is playing to the vulgarity a bit.

there is no sense to fix it until you quit fighting.. the only thing you can do is drain it...

since mma is getting so popular, i think maybe in the future they will figure something out to better protect the ears...

looks are one thing, but losing your hearing from repeated blows to the ears is something that should def raise some concerns...

The fight should have been called in the second round when Kimbo got hit 20 something times in the head without putting up any defense. However EliteXC was all over hits nuts and Kimbo is their poster boy right now so of course they didn't call it. The fight wasn't called for the ear being popped it was called cause his opponent (cant remember his name) was phased with the combo of punches Slice landed at the beginning of the 3rd. It was prematurely called even though Kimbo probably would have knocked him out soon anyway. The fight seemed rigged and exposed Kimbo flaws as a MMA fighter hopefully he will improve and prove himself to be worthy of being considered a MMA fighter only time will tell.

Yeah but the ear got nothing to do with the stoppage... This was clearly fixed.

pamon 06-04-2008 01:32 AM

that ear was fucking nasty... never seen that before... pretty gruesome... watching it pop and bleed was fugly... kimbo was done in that fight when he got taken to the mat and was beaten down like the street thug that he is. Elite XC has got big $$ riding on his fat ass and it'll burn quickly... Put him against a "C" class UFC fighter and he goes down in 30 seconds... good brawler but horrible MMA & mat skills... IMHO

Yup.. u specifically get it when u wrap your arms around 1 or both legs during take downs and or passing the guard using the leg wrap technique.

In september i will have been doing BJJ for 17 years. I managed to avoid cauliflower ear.

How?? I wore Wrestling head gear for the 1st 7 years of BJJ training. Then i changed my guard pass by bridging my head towards the legs when i wrapped them up for a controlled pass. That passing style hurt the other guy, give me better control when passing and kept my ears pretty.

Keep in mind when i pass, i'm on my feet with 1 or both legs wrapped up, bridging on my neck with all of my weight focused on the top side of my head, not the side of my face rubbing my ear. (if you roll u know what i am saying)

I have had the ear cartilage break and swell before (the start of cauliflower ear), but i would drain my ear with an 18 gauge needle and ice it that night.

Its funny because BJJ guys loved that look. It is equivalent to a pit bull get it ears cut short. It intimidates other fighters and BJJ guys.

People sometimes look at my ears and ask how are you a BJJ black belt???? My answer is "I am that fucking good!!" lol

I am not a bull shiter or a tough guy just a relayer of fact. If you have doubt in what i say check out who gave me my Black belt.. http://www.riganmachado.com/black_belts.asp

JustDave is 100% Legit BJJ Black Belt and Badass. Just by having lunch, and talking about my game, he was able to fix some flaws so well, my instructors asked me if I was taking private classes somewhere else! :)

Btw, this is what BAS had to say about the fight:

Quote:

as Rutten, Kimbo's trainer, former King of Pancrase, and UFC Champion made this statement:

People ask me if the fight should have been stopped at the end in the second round, I say YES because those are the rules, it should have been stopped because Kimbo didn't do anything to improve his situation. But I think what made the ref NOT do it was the fact that Kimbo was giving his thumbs up the whole time to let the referee know that he was OK. This was the refs decission, not Kimbo's.

notoldschool 06-04-2008 10:48 AM

Im thinking that he was told to go in like that knowing this would happen. Any fighter that doesnt want to lose makes sure he doesnt take the chance by not draining his elephant ear.

Magnus 06-04-2008 11:57 AM

When I wrestled I would wear ear guards now and then to keep them off the mats.. hurts liek a mofo. That dude had the sickest case I have ever seen, it exploded.

Kimbo needs to get the ground game worked out but his stand up is deadly.

Must be.. if he drained his ear, there wouldn't be a stoppage

Anthony 06-04-2008 12:07 PM

Pay attention everyone...

MMA FIGHTS ARE NOT STOPPED FOR A BLEEDING EAR.

Socks 06-04-2008 02:51 PM

I'm pretty sure the ref stopped it because of the ear and not the punches. Either he was confused about what to do, or just so horrified he figured he had to call it.. But why not consult with a, you know.. doctor?
