Try Hamachi + TightVNC. That´s what I use.
Both can be set to run at Windows startup.

Check this article out:

Another vote for Log Me In!

I use it to admin my family computers around the world.

What can these services do that Tight VNC can't? I've only played with this a little bit in the past... I've paid and not paid. After realizing what the free stuff can do, I wasn't sure why I was paying before?

logmein is the way to go

Logmein is free up to 5 computers.

The way my network is set up, I had problems getting some similar programs to work properly, or at all.

That is until I discovered TeamViewer. It works like magic (and it's free).

:thumbsup

Another vote for Logmein, that remote access software has saved me a number of times.

I use Hamachi to create a secure VPN that will work even with computers behind routers.
That way I can use TightVNC to access my office computer that is behind the router at work.

I think Logmein bought Hamachi sometime ago.

Both are free too. :thumbsup

which one of these two is lighter on system resources though?

I prefer VNC because it's simple and works on a lot of platforms.
