AppleTV - Anyone have it?

Anyone have this? Would you recommend it?

Any cool hacks, etc you can do with it?

GrouchyAdmin 06-10-2008 01:13 PM

I looked into it, and was instantly turned off. Gee, you can buy shit off of iTunes, and stream from YouTube. My DVR has more of a selection, costs less, and won't get RickRolled. :thumbsup

I have 2 apple tv's in my house and love them. I have no problem paying for shit on itunes.

Holly 06-10-2008 01:19 PM

No.

But I can't wait to hear about how much more superior it is to other TVs and how the people who have it are clearly more advanced, cool, and on the cutting edge.

It's not a TV holly... It's a set top box for renting off Itunes.

I like the idea of it , but wait till Apple gets more content into the catalogue before buying one I think.

I will say this, I can rent more off an apple TV than off my cable provider, IN HD .. for less. so that in itself is appealing

I believe that rentals are $3.99 for HD and 2.99 for regular
My cable provider charges me $5.99 per movie

Brad Gosse 06-10-2008 01:31 PM

Rentals are $3.99 for sd and $499 for HD a little less than blockbuster and they last for 30 days.

TV Shows are $1.99 to purchase

I like it too because it streams all my photos and music to my flatscreen tv's throughout the house and make for a great party pleaser.

So you can't D/L and save them? It's just a rental service?

I am not aware of a crack or software yet to keep the movies that you have rented ..thats the only thing that is stopping me from getting one ...it's nice to take some movies with you for the kids on those long road trips ...

hackint0sh has a great section...

I thought about getting one, then someone on here actually gave me a much better idea. A Mac Mini. So now I have a Mac Mini with wireless keyboard/mouse hooked up to the RGB on my LCD TV and to my home theater system. Have all my tunes, movies, can watch TV shows Online in HD. Right now I am on my main Mac in my office, and I am using Screen Share to change the iTunes on the Mac Mini, it's fucking nice... worth the extra money for sure.

Azlord 06-10-2008 03:15 PM

Get a Xbox360, does everything the AppleTV does and more.

Then buy them cheap ass motherfucker. Why do people expect to get full priced things for next to nothing? Do you go to the rental store and expect to get to keep the movie? Um no. So why would you think you could keep a Itunes rental?

No but you can rent them from XBOX Live for the same price and you can also rent them from Amazon and stream them to your XBOX 360. that's TWO chocies vs ONE choice for Apple. Oh and if you already own a tivo you can rent movies from Amazon and stream it to your tv with that.

DateDoc 06-10-2008 03:44 PM

Oh, Holly!! It's superior to others, and people who have it clearly more advanced, cool and on the cutting edge!

hypedough 06-10-2008 06:42 PM

I love mine, I just rip my DVDs to the computer and convert them to work with the AppleTV. Really effective and the quality is great.

I'm not sure what to say to you. That was a surprisingly polite and well written reply.

I could answer you better if you called me an ignorant cunt.

Oh my lord. You're one, too?

You know if you married me, you'd have to throw all that apple shit out. No way would my pc sit next to that crap.

mrkris 06-10-2008 09:20 PM

It seems as though people are misunderstanding what all the appleTV does. Say you don't want to stack your thousand DVD collection in your livingroom, not a problem. Rip your dvds with handbrake, load them in iTunes, and then stream them from your appleTV. People say to just get a macmini, but I don't like the idea of having to maintain a computer with all the updates, keyboard, etc.

brandonstills 06-10-2008 11:48 PM

I never really understood what the advantage of it was. Why not just use a normal computer and hook it up to a big TV?

i think because the average consumer doesn't know how to hook up a computer to a TV....

im sure i could but i dont want an ugly ass computer in my living room or bedroom... it would look totally out of place hehe
