I need to stick to my macbook for a couple of days till all stuff arives over here, so iam looking for the following apps..

WinRar... i tried Stuffit Expander but it gives me an error on most of my .rar files
A good ftp client.. i use cyberduck at the moment but it sucks ass
A IRC client which supports blowfish encryption
Office.. OpenOffice.. is that available for the Mac? Didnt look yet..
For ICQ i use AudiumX but it also sucks..

Anyone knows some good tools for the Mac? Some stuff you must have on it?

Web : Firefox
ICQ/AIM : Adium (Works great here)
Office X (Microsoft) Word, excell, etc.. You have Entourage in there which is awesome for Mails, contacts, agenda, etc...
FTP: Fetch
Coding : BB Edit
IRC : I use X-Chat Aqua, but if you find a better one I'd like it too :)

I'm Looking For A... 06-10-2008 01:28 PM

the more you stick to it, the less it sucks :D

crockett 06-10-2008 01:32 PM

For win rar I'm using UnRarX I haven't tried any of the other stuff so far. Other than installing VLC player. I'm just using my Mac for some non adult work so I have the Modo and Unity installed (3d programs).

dailyduke 06-10-2008 01:38 PM

I can hold my own, even though my Objective C sucks and I absolutely hate the GUI tools. They slow me down because I'm used to typing it out.

Have never investigated making anything for iPhone; I did make a WAP transfer site so I could put pictures and music on my Nokia without having to buy a cable or pay for doing so.

I might have to look at an SDK, I could invent the world's most obnoxious program that locks the input, sets the volume to full, and shouts "I'm browsing the web for sodomy!", then offer it as a free download.

Your missing out. :1orglaugh

Quicksilver.

If you're not using Quicksilver with your Mac you are seriously missing out.

candyflip 06-10-2008 02:16 PM

Quicksilver and VMWare Fusion (or Parallels).

aico 06-10-2008 02:17 PM

What OS are you using? I have never had a problem opening a rar file with the built-in expander.

FTP - Transmit (will sync with your other Macs so all your shortcuts are the same)
Code - BBEdit or Coda (Coda works with Transmit, same company, Panic)
Office - Office X, or if just need word process Pages is nice
ICQ - I use ICQ 3.4

The way that it works is stable with Mach, but the relocation is virtually nothing, and the extra space is marginal; some patches may very well be binary patches (Apple has done this with firmware releases before), and those will not apply to modified binaries. You also can't check for any trojanized programs easily, having just run a sweeping modification to remove the (PPC/intel) portion of the binary, and any non-applicable language files.

Just because you can remove it doesn't mean that you should. This is like running 'strip' on everything under UNIX. You may not find anything broken initially, but then you're probably gonna get fucked.

Captain FTP was the only FTP client on Mac I liked. I don't understand the Transmit hype at all. It's mediocre at best.

Check out DevonThink for an organizer. I had been using Ace Text on the PC when I switched to mac. I wanted something similar and DevonThink looked good. Now that I gave up on Mac I still catch myself going back to my macbook to get some info I have stored in devonthink
http://www.devon-technologies.com/pr...ink/index.html

I also love Coda. I had a couple of hours of coding to do today so I laid down in bed with the macbook, fired up coda and got it done. It's better than anything I have used on the PC. It sucks that I have to hang on to one of my macs for a couple of apps but I am not ready to give up coda and devonthink just yet.
