Cute Ftp sucks ass

48% cpu usage on a quad core system

im going back to leach ftp :2 cents:

jeffrey 06-10-2008 03:30 PM

I like smart ftp.

Also I doubt cute ftp is using more then 1 core. Most programs dont know what to do when there are 2 even.

Nookster 06-10-2008 03:32 PM

Sounds more like a system problem than anything else.

GrouchyAdmin 06-10-2008 03:32 PM

Are you downloading the entire fucking internet? FTP is hardly a CPU waster.

Nookster 06-10-2008 03:35 PM

BTW, running cute on a quad, currently:
CPU%: 00 Mem Usage: 9,932 K

Check that your quad was setup correctly and there's nothing wrong with mem chips. :2 cents:

Babaganoosh 06-10-2008 03:41 PM

Do a directory listing on a massive directory and watch the CPU. That's what made me switch to FlashFXP years ago.

And that's a problem for the client? The root of the problem lies with the developer/webmaster who setup/uses the "massive directory". What kinda idiot just lets their directories go out of control? You're just asking for trouble with directories so massive that they lag connections trying to get data from them.
If you need to deal with these "massive directories" you better make sure that your own CPU can handle the data transfer when you're working with them!

That's not the point. FlashFXP can handle it just fine.

jeffrey 06-10-2008 04:23 PM

I was curious, so I fired up CuteFTP (not sure why I have it installed??), and even with multiple connections open and downloading and having a couple connections loading my largest directory listing (not that big though) I simply can not get it to use more then 9% of my dual core AMD.

I still like smart ftp better.

_Richard_ 06-10-2008 04:48 PM

required the same system requirements of itunes here

VeriSexy 06-11-2008 12:58 AM

Used it in the past.... but switched to flashfxp, never looked back

Nasty D 06-11-2008 01:01 AM

Filezilla

works great and its free

st0ned 06-11-2008 01:03 AM

Yeah I used CuteFTP for years and finally gave it up after little problems with is continued to annoy me. I have since been using FileZilla with no complaints.

StuartD 06-11-2008 02:22 AM

CuteFTP used to be THE program of choice for doing file transfers but it fell behind the times and never recovered. All the other FTP programs surpassed it.

FileZilla is my choice these days as well.

Sarah_Jayne 06-11-2008 03:43 AM

I am a flashfxp person..I will use cute if I have to but I don't really like it.

fris 06-11-2008 04:05 AM

i use flashfxp, no issues, its lightweight

Sosa 06-11-2008 09:34 AM

flashfxp for me as well

Horny Dude 06-11-2008 09:53 AM

I like CoreFTP, very simple and free.

mailman 06-11-2008 09:57 AM

Been using CuteFTP for years now and never an issue.

Snake Doctor 06-11-2008 10:09 AM

I stopped using cuteftp a little while ago after 7 years of using only cuteftp.

Someone pointed me to coreftp (coreftp.com) and the lite version is free, and much faster and better than cuteftp IMO.

Sly 06-11-2008 10:16 AM

I use Cute FTP. Of the various programs I tried years ago, I liked that best and never found a reason to look elsewhere.

Anyway, of the programs I use, I find Firefox to be the biggest resource eater (RAM) once you start opening multiple tabs. 300 Mb plus easily.

Same here

Persius 06-11-2008 12:00 PM

Flash Fxp and Smart are my choices

ztik 06-11-2008 12:09 PM

windows explorer ftp ftw lol

Hell House Vic 06-11-2008 02:33 PM

I agree that program blows. I was temporarily forced to use it recently and felt like someone cut off both my thumbs. So awkward and slow.

image hosting type situations this is unavoidable, you're an idiot if you seriously think that there isn't EVER a situation where massive directories are unavoidable.

The good news is some filesystems will LIMIT you to 30k directories (I've hit it before)

I use winscp for everything, FTP, SFTP and I like the integration with putty for when I want to jump in and do something real quick in shell.

jpwhits 06-11-2008 02:59 PM

Filezilla forever

Give him a break. He's only read about the kinds of directories you and I have worked on (or own).

payd2purv 06-11-2008 03:39 PM

what the hell is the o.p talkin about?

bdld 06-11-2008 04:40 PM

i use an older version of smart ftp. cute ftp was my old client back in the day but they were pretty bad.
