costs go up - but that happens, such things happen, in the place where I reside at the moment the costs go up about 15 pct. every year in average, and you can't confront that with inflation that's about 3 - 6 pct. , no need to go crazy about it.

People in the US have to drive farther too. People have family all over the US. People in Europe don't have to trravel that far to visit family. For example the furthest you'd travel in the UK by road would be from Aberdeen to Plymouth( and how many would actually be making that trip? ) and that's only 770 miles. That wouldn't even get you 1/3 the way from NY to SF or Maine to San Diego or Seattle to Miami.
