Do you feel much sympathy for people that fall for email scams?

I am not talking a super clever scam or even a phishing bank scam but people that fall for the 'you have one the lottery' type scams. I just watched a bit on the news about how more and more of such scams are being run out of England and Holland (for some reason) rather than Nigeria. The story focused on some guy from Greece who got one of the emails about winning some lottery somewhere and he replied and through the course of the scam he ended shelling out over 200k pounds (about 400k American dollars). Okay, the guy was about 60 but is that really an excuse to fall for something like that so deeply? Am I just being cold?

I do feel sorry for them. Yes they might be greedy in thinking they are gonna be super rich or something but still its not a nice thing. There's still too many people who dont know how to use the internet properly and would fall for it. The assholes doing it need to be caught and punished severly.

VeriSexy 06-12-2008 06:47 AM

Yes and no.. some people don't have common sense

Why do you need to know how to use the internet to figure that you should just send somebody that much money? Same thing with phone scams. It isn't as if they are brand new things that the 60 year olds would have heard about when they were younger.

I agree that it is wrong to scam people and the scammers need to be punished but just that you have to wonder about common sense.

florin 06-12-2008 06:54 AM

nope...they fall too easy, thinking only at some easy-made cash...

nico-t 06-12-2008 07:02 AM

what i don't understand is how the fuck someone ends up transfering cash to people who want to send them cash???

1) Get cash
2) ???
3) Lose cash

wtf

pornguy 06-12-2008 07:05 AM

Anyone who can not see though that, needs to get off the computer until they can get some common sense.

xentech 06-12-2008 07:13 AM

They are idiots and if you can exploit them then go for it, that's just the way it is...

Holly 06-12-2008 08:47 AM

Fuck 'em.

Czech 06-12-2008 08:49 AM

Tom_PM 06-12-2008 09:40 AM

Only when I see them on Judge Judy or something like that, lmao. I mean at the point where you are going to court because you can't see you and your friend were scammed together, it's just one step beyond.

The rule of "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is" should apply in all things no matter how much or how little one "knows the internet"

I have very little sympathy for the stupid, the gullible, or the stupidly gullible.

In thinking back, I can remember a time when I knew nothing about the internet at all, but when I got one of those Nigerian "We want to transfer 24 million USD to your account" letters I knew right away it was a scam.

No sale on the sympathy.

That part of your post I can agree with 100%.

Scott McD 06-12-2008 11:27 AM

Nope, none at all.

People who are dumb enough to think that shit could even possibly be real, deserve to get bumped!

(ok maybe thats a little harsh but still)

CDSmith 06-12-2008 11:41 AM

If there were no gullible people who don't think before they act, there would BE no scammers.

Chew on that for a while.

Fetish Gimp 06-12-2008 11:46 AM

Many of you think "I'm too smart to fall for a line of bullshit like that", remember that Bush got elected twice.

Paco, of Large Cash. 06-12-2008 11:50 AM

although I understand it is empathy one should feel, every now and then I can not help but feel sympathy for those with handicaps, such as all the mental midgets whom have been reeled in!

2012 06-12-2008 11:51 AM

yeah, most of the ones that get scammed are the elderly and mentally challenged

P.T. Barnum would probably have said it never was.
