Why do people add you on icq and not send a message?

I get it all the time someone adds me and waits for me to icq them.

No message nothing but adding me.

Whats the fucking point ?

Brad 06-13-2008 10:10 AM

I often wonder the same thing. Anyone know?

Juicy D. Links 06-13-2008 10:12 AM

hehehehe very true man loll

uno 06-13-2008 10:18 AM

I think its for spam bots. I get a lot of random alphanumeric string nicknames trying to add me.

not spam bots names look like webmasters i get very little spam on icq maybee 2-3 messages a year.

If I were to hazard a guess... I would say that it is largely do to the fact that most of the time you add someone to your ICQ because whatever you are doing in that moment requires you to talk them.

Most often it is somewhere between an hour and 7 days before that person actually ads you.

Usually by then something else all important is consuming your time so until you get back to whatever it was you were doing when you looked for this new addition do you remember to say hello.

Maybe not totally the best etiquette... but such is the world of Internet.

but if your spend the time to add the person why not send a message with whatever you were going to say ?

We all know having ADD is a requirement to be a webmaster

LOL

sniperwolf 06-13-2008 11:21 AM

perhaps they just want you to put in their contacts but has no message in mind to tell you as for the moment... just in case they'll be needing you in the future, they have your contacts...

baddog 06-13-2008 11:22 AM

spammers

After Shock Media 06-13-2008 11:55 AM

I will add people on occassion and drop them into a group, add a note and not message. Just so if I need it in future I will have it.

emac 06-13-2008 12:09 PM

might be for future references.

DigitalPimp 06-13-2008 12:21 PM

I do it all the time. Whenever I signup for a program, I add a programs contact into ICQ so that when I do need to contact them I don't have to go searching for their address.

rowan 06-13-2008 01:55 PM

Could be that their msg is blocked by ICQ. If they include a URL then there's a good chance you'll never see it.

CDSmith 06-13-2008 02:00 PM

I get added like this by 1-3 and sometimes more per day, no message, just added. I also get the odd message from somone not on my list, it's always pure crap. Always.

Definitely spammers at work. I ignore the lot of it. In some extreme cases I add them to my ignore list, and get on with my day.

Porko 06-13-2008 02:10 PM

they think that its like myspace "add friends"

MichaelP 06-13-2008 02:15 PM

Both Ellisa and Sniperwolf are correct : 2 cents:

IllTestYourGirls 06-13-2008 03:15 PM

I always make a point to send a message then add the person. Nothing pisses me off more!

Personally, nothing irritates me more than some n00b that requests authorization because they "might" be needing me in the future.

Spunky 06-13-2008 06:17 PM

They just get deleted if they dont send a message

tony286 06-13-2008 06:20 PM

I agree it makes no sense.

Rochard 06-13-2008 06:25 PM

Sometimes i add people in the industry that I might want to have on my ICQ list but I don't want or need to talk to them at that moment....

im gonna add you to my list and then send you a message that says "i dont need or want to talk to you at the moment"

ive done it, cause im waiting for that person to come online so we can chat.

why? cause if i message you and then 2 days later you get on icq and message me back i will have forgotten what i messaged you in the first place for ...... BITCH

JOKER 06-13-2008 08:06 PM

For future reference - I'm doing it all the time, as my Trillian is grouped and has a nice "personal notes" feature.

I don't understand how someone could be irritated by that... just see it as someone taking your business card and writing a note on the back - could lead to future business as well :2 cents:

fris 06-13-2008 08:30 PM

fuckin douchebags

Mainly because there are limits as to how many can be on your list. I have to thin out my list frequently just so new people that want to talk now can be added.

It is nothing personal.

potter 06-14-2008 04:58 AM

yeah it's fuckin weird.

VeriSexy 06-14-2008 06:19 AM

I hear ya... one of my pet peaves

CDSmith 06-14-2008 06:41 AM

Sorry, but when you check their personal ICQ data and it says "russian male - 17" or "chinese female - 37", chances are good that it's not a webmaster. And that's what most of them are... not webmasters.

You people saying "maybe they add you because they want you in their list for later" are out to lunch.
