How frugal are you?

Do you take your income for granted and blow it all because you think it will always flow at the same level or higher or do you play it conservative and spend less than you make because you feel the tap can stop flowing at any time? Do you analyze and research items you buy to get the most value for the least amount of money? Or do you just buy what you want because you want it? Do you drive a car that solely fits your needs or do you drive a car that makes you look rich to outsiders, and so on? I think of this every time I see the landlord of my office building that holds about $50MM in commercial property and I have never seen him in any other car than a 1999 Ford Ranger for the past 5 years.

My adult income is all discretionary - this is strictly a hobby and I have a target for this year - but bottom line is, if this all disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't be too concerned. We garage sale, love getting a bargain, and don't care who thinks my car sucks - it gets me from a to B and isn't a complete POS that blows smoke, so who cares. I don't look or act rich, but I can buy anything I want.. but choose not to.

CurrentlySober 06-14-2008 07:11 PM

i kant even speel frugal

snaker 06-14-2008 08:22 PM

i still shop goodwill

GrouchyAdmin 06-14-2008 08:23 PM

I won't think twice about spending hundreds on a gift.. which is about what my car is worth. I'll spend money, just not on myself. I'd rather save it for when I need it.

GrouchyAdmin 06-14-2008 08:27 PM

Oh yeah. Incidental: I borrowed a TV nearly as old as I am, when I moved here. If not for a program here, I probably would still be using it. :thumbsup

Sounds like my family. We dont carry any debt. If you cant pay cash for it you dont need it. We should be paying cash for our first (modest) house next year sometime.

I spend money on what makes me happy, ie wheels for my car, computer stuff, ...booze. It's usually less then I make those, but i wouldn't call myself frugal. I make enough to cover what i need, cover what I want, and still save.

ultimatebbwdotcom 06-15-2008 02:56 PM

Dad taught me to save up for what I wanted and half the time when I got the cash together, I found out I didnt want/need it after all or changed my mind.

Thats always been a lesson I've stuck with and its not that I'm so frugal I have a fork in the sugar bowl, I just prefer saving now.

I used to get a thrill out of hyperconsuming and spending my money on BS stuff that I really didn't need. About 5 years ago I hit a stage where the thrill was derived from how much I thought I could save and maximize for my $.

I wise man once told me that the rich get richer by acting poor (not really POOR but you know what I mean) and the poor stay poor by acting rich. LOL

DigitalPimp 06-15-2008 05:13 PM

I used to spend normally, then went through years of tough times and learned to cut back drastically, then made alot of money but have never been able to shake my learned frugalness. Wish I knew how to get back to how I used to spend as I often find myself being concerend over such relatively small money matters it drives me crazy.

aztecboi2003 06-15-2008 07:23 PM

I won't pay more than $140 for a HH with a hottie. Last time out I got a hr for $140 cuz she knows me. If she's hella fine I will catch her when she runs a special. :2 cents:

i just spent all my money to my family. I give all the things they need to help them have a better life.

ztik 06-16-2008 08:46 AM

I have a rule I don't spend over what I made that same day.

On large justified purchases I let that rule slide

I never buy anything until I need to. NEED to.

I lost 2 tv's, a office phone, router and cable modem in the storms 10 days ago. Luckily I had a spare phone, and only the tuner is dead on one of my tv's. So I can hold off on repurchasing a bit. Cable company replaced the modem, now I'm shopping for a new router. Because I actually NEED it.

I have 1 pair of jeans that fits, 1 pair of sneakers and I still wear t-shirts that I've gotten free from my old job that I left in 2000. Is this frugal?

All I know is: you dont get rich by writing a bunch of checks.

I think that's true! Those stingy people get the best in life while those spent lavishly lost everything they have.

We are careful with the money we make, but we have everything that we want.
