Anyone here using Ubuntu?

Or even dual booting it with XP? I want to play around with it and learn some Linux, but am wondering how useful it is as a main system. Does anyone here use it for non-uber-geeky purposes? :)

Emil 06-18-2008 12:14 PM

I use it as my main system on my laptop. It does work pretty good.

Ice 06-18-2008 12:14 PM

I use it on one of my desktops at home... works awesome

Elli 06-18-2008 12:17 PM

Hm, looks good so far, then! What about doing productivity stuff? Is it demanding hardware-wise?

chris01282 06-18-2008 12:22 PM

put xp on the first partition then ubuntu on the second and let it control the boot loader and then you up and down arrow to select the os you want to boot into and press enter

hardware wise, it uses a lot less resources than xp to run, plus it is more secure

try it, you'll like it

So it doesn't yet? This is kinda what I'm after. And Sony Vegas.

Lycanthrope 06-18-2008 12:50 PM

That is probably the last distro you'll want to install if you actually want to learn some linux.

Let's put it this way. XP keeps getting unstable after a few months and I don't want to go Vista. I'd rather go Linux if I can.

That different, eh? Hm. What would you recommend then, both for a bit of learning and stable productivity?

Lycanthrope 06-18-2008 01:39 PM

Like u-Bob I prefer Slackware myself, but it isn't for most people (though not as much now as versions past, you do have to manually edit a few config files), so if you just want to "use" linux without learning too many new things... Debian, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mandriva, PCLOS, Zenwalk... pretty much those in the top 10 or so on http://distrowatch.com will suit you.

GrouchyAdmin 06-18-2008 01:41 PM

OpenSUSE 11.0 released tomorrow.

Malicious Biz 06-18-2008 01:50 PM

I love me some Ubuntu

photoshop cs2 runs fine and dandy under wine for me. I use kompozer for html/css editing

u-Bob is very right on that one, but Slackware can be hard to start with I think. Ubuntu kinda works out of the box these days, but is less stable and flexible as Slackware.
Photoshop 7 and Dreamweaver 2004 can be used under wine ( wine uses windows libraries to run windows applications under linux ) but If you want to stop using windows and use all adobe products and edit some videos why not buy a Mac. Believe me, you will love it:thumbsup
Good luck

nah, if windows can run programs properly, then linux should have no problem, and when that day comes, i'll switch, but until then, i'll stick with xp and mac os x

Linux can run programs properly, programs made for linux. But it can run a lot of windows programs under wine without any problem.

martinsc 06-19-2008 02:03 AM

i love it .... but only playing around with it... i don't use it (yet) to get any work done....

StuartD 06-19-2008 02:20 AM

I use Fedora 9 personally... more robust I think.
But for beginning, ubuntu is a great way to go.

And no dual boot. I really don't like Windows. And I get my work done just fine without it.

u-Bob 06-19-2008 11:54 AM

I'd say vectorlinux is a good one to begin with... user friendly + the stability of a slackware system.

Jens Van Assterdam 06-19-2008 11:55 AM

This stranger Kmanrox does.. from what i have heard..

fuzebox 06-19-2008 11:59 AM

I've been running Linux as my only operating system for 11 years, but I guess you could call that geek purposes...

Been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and it's great, nice and easy. I don't even program much anymore, but I use linux software for video editing and encoding, building sites and galleries, cropping thumbs etc, all my day to day webmaster tasks.

Pretty much what I mean is I will switch once my programs that I want support Linux, I know its not Linux' fault that Adobe doesn't make their software compatable, but I'm not switching to something "similar" to what I want to use, because there is alternatives. I'll wait till Adobe gets it there act straight.

And if you use a GUI only, you won't learn shit about linux.

Sweet! that is very encouraging! Do you mind if I ask which proggies you use for the photo/video processing? right now I'm using Nikon Capture NX and Photoshop CS3 for my photos, Sony vegas for video.

Anyone professing the strengths of Slackware is someone who either is perpetually stuck in 1995, or doesn't yet realize that unpacking biinary payloads into a root directory with marginal bounds checking is a bad idea.

That said, I don't give a shit what you use. Pay me to support it.
