Ever known anybody that claims to have been abducted by aliens?

Just curious...I have been doing some reading up for a course I am taking on people who have 'real' memories of alien abduction. I will put my cards on the table and say I don't believe in UFOs, etc but I love studying how the mind works and the memories it can create.

Do you know anybody that has ever claimed to have been abducted by aliens? How are these claims greeted in your family/social circle?

After Shock Media 06-30-2008 04:03 AM

I shall not comment as it may invoke a ghastly rant from me. Though I would like to thank you for creating a thread that will eventually make my blood boil and possibly either have an aneurysm or age a bit more.

faze 06-30-2008 04:11 AM

when i was in the 6th grade i remember waking up in my room, exactly where i was sleeping, and the entire room was bright green (cliche eh? well i haven't said anything about aliens yet) and my arms and legs both shot directly into the air above me, and i was paralyzed like that.

im guessing it was just the most vivid dream of my life. a therapist (perhaps a wacky one) once told me that he thought it was an "attempted spirit possession", but i'll never know.

i do believe in intelligent life elsewhere.

considering the limitlessness of the universe, accompanied by the way elements naturally join together to create matter (your own dna is a shining example of this), it's simply ignorant to believe that other lifeforms don't exist in faraway galaxies.

JamesK 06-30-2008 04:15 AM

I'm happy I don't. A person has to be seriously fucked up to believe they've been abducted by aliens. I remember watching a show about that and everyone described the aliens the same way they looked in all movies. Then there's scientists saying that IF there were any aliens, the chance they would look anything like seen in movies is very slim.

In other words: they've seen a movie, got scared and are now trippin balls.

Thank you for being rational. Also should bitch slap that therapist and charge back. Just know that odds are you experienced sleep paralysis along with a waking dream.

Iron Fist 06-30-2008 04:20 AM

I think FOX is showing a new one called TAKEN in the next few days :)

Yup, in most cases that is what it sounds like to me. However, the cases that I find interesting are the ones that were amongst the first reported, such as Betty and Barney Hill and where it is a joint experience. I don't believe they were abducted but I do tend to lean towards them actually believing themselves that they were - ie not trying to cash in on making something up. It is interesting that their created memories come up with very similar things.

Now, after the 'firsts' it is pretty easy to see how everybody else is claiming to see the same things they did. Even if they believe it themselves those pop-culture images and tales are stuck somewhere in the brain.

guess what? back in '06 i emailed a counselor of betty and barney hill explaining my 'experience' (which we have already debunked as non-supernatural itt)

anyway, this counselor was the wacky therapist i was referring to in my above post.

i just dug it up in my gmail for this thread, here was his reply to my email:

Hello,

I will reply by inserts.

I just got done watching the History Channel and I was amazed to find
that the first UFO abduction was the first reported abduction story in
the United States. I did some Googling and stumbled across your
website. Are you the hypnotist that worked with the Hills?

No, the hypnotist was Dr. Simon. My role was friend and counselor.

Anyway, switching topics when I was about 12 years old (I'm 19 now), I
remember I was sleeping in bed in my house. I woke up
to my arms and legs sticking straight into the air and a bright
fluorescent green light (yes, this sounds stereotypical but
nevertheless it was green) filling my entire room. My legs and feet
were stuck straight into the air and I couldn't move anywhere. I was
frozen in place and I remember this happening for a good 3 seconds
before my memory goes blank. I'm positive that this wasn't just a
lucid dream, because I've never had a vivid lucid dream only last for
3 seconds. I am 100% sure that this happened and I believe other
things may have happened but my memory had been "erased" such as the
Hills. I went to school the next day and told my
friends about it. I recall only 1 believing me and about 10 not
believing me. Which surprised me because I'm definitely not a sci-fi
geek who gets kicks out of alien abduction or telling crazy stories.
This definitely is the oddest thing that has ever happened to me in my
life.

Yes, that was an odd experience. I don't know whether ETs were involved, but it does sound as though someone was trying to do something to you. Perhaps an attempt at spirit possession. However, unless you had recurrent dreams of being abducted, as the Hills did, or a change of personality and attitude, whatever was tried didn't work.
ha!

think he might have had any influence in the betty and barney hill story? ;)

faze 06-30-2008 05:03 AM

(also i was pretty sure for years that something supernatural happened until i looked into sleep paralysis and waking dreams a couple of years ago. the above email speaks of that time period. i don't believe i was possessed or abducted.)

I suppose so much depends on if he was a 'friend' to them before the hypnosis tapes or after but yes I (and I am sure many others) suspect that there was some suggestion to them after whatever it was they actually thought happened to them. You almost have to feel bad for them to really feel they had such dramatic experiences.

faze 06-30-2008 05:07 AM

yeah.

the power of suggestion is mighty. naive people certainly build off of each other. there's no way to tell for sure what did or didn't happen in the case of the hills, as well as virtually every other alleged abduction case.

I have long had a memory of what I now know to be a sort of waking dream that took place when I was a kid - maybe 6 or 7. I was sleeping on the couch at night (a very rare thing at that age as my mom certainly would have made me go do bed) and I could 'remember' waking up and Mary (yes, that Mary) being on the stairs, which was near the downstairs couch) and reaching her arm out to me (in a haze of various colors and lights) and suggesting I go do bed. Now, it felt very real and I am 31 now and I can remember it as clearly as I did that night. At that age I was going to church a lot and was probably doing a lot about the Easter or Christmas story and I am sure it was just me having a dream combined with a guilt trip about not properly going to bed. Luckily, I could sort that out in my brain as not being real but I could see how other people might feel that was something that really happened to them.

After Shock Media 06-30-2008 05:11 AM

The best is over history it has changed based on popular belief. For longest time it was angels, demons, and evil spirits. After the sci fi era began it slowly shifted to aliens. As aliens have evolved so has the descriptions of them. Now pretty much nearly everyone is abducted by a certain Hollywood style alien form.

faze 06-30-2008 05:17 AM

sarah: yup, wild imagination. luckily you aren't a delusional headcase religious fanatic gloating about what you believe to be a legitimate encounter with "mary".

aftershockmedia: yea. hollywood and dimethyltryptamine do wacky things to the human mind.

I used to get sleep paralysis quite a lot. (usually after taking E) :winkwink:

Anyway, it is scary at first, and i can see how people believe there is something more to it than "just a dream".

After i had 3 or 4 of them, i started to take control of them a bit more, as i knew what was happening. I actually started to enjoy them :1orglaugh

Don't get it any more though... :(

G-Rotica 06-30-2008 07:53 AM

severe 06-30-2008 07:57 AM

i dont understand 2 things:
1 how can someone believe / not believe in a ufo. ufo = unidentified flying object, so if its flying and u dont know wtf it is its a ufo.
2 why do people associate something unidentified with instant extraterrestrial, if you know what it is its not 'unidentified' by definition.... and if you dont know, then your just making shit up.

Kevsh 06-30-2008 07:58 AM

Do you have a Rolodex on your desk that keeps coming up with new questions every day?
Just curious :)

To answer your question, no.
And if it happened to me, I think I'd keep it to myself.

Nope..just happens to be something I am reading about at the moment for a class for my Masters degree. I just am a naturally inquisitive person.

I get your point but after awhile some terms just get certain cultural meanings and associations. So, yes anything flying in the sky that isn't identified is a UFO and yes obviously I believe that there could be something in the sky that is unidentified for a period that has nothing to do with aliens. That said, in a cultural sense if somebody says 'UFO' nearly every person in our societies think of aliens.

Kudles 06-30-2008 11:11 AM

Geez I wish I need a little more excitement in my life.

Sarah_Jayne 06-30-2008 11:30 AM

I am sure if you try real hard you can think of a memory of one.

Exfuckingxactly. In 30 years from now Aliens will look different in movies and suddenly everyone who sees an alien will describe it the way it supposed to look in that time.

IMO same holds true for these "light at the end of the tunnel" Life & death experiences.

It's all bullshit. The abduction parts anyways.

Yup and the thing is though you can see how some of the actual people making the claims really do believe it happened. Of course a load others are just scam artists.

True story...

About 10 years ago, I was at a buddy's house playing nintendo or something like that. It was about midnight when all of a sudden the entire house was lit up with a flashing light coming from outside. We stepped out onto his deck to see what it was and one half of the entire city was being lit up every 10 seconds or so from a dome like structure to the east. The only thing I could think of was "If aliens had landed, I had to get home to my wife and new born son".

The next day in the paper, there was an article on the front page about the "Controlled burn" that a local chemical plant had had the night before. Being from a larger city I had no idea what the hell it had been. My buddy still laughs at me about this.

I haven't smoked dope since.
