Starbucks closing 600 stores in the US!
Starbucks closing 600 US stores, most opened in the last 2 years
SEATTLE (AP) -- Starbucks Corp. said Tuesday it will close 600 company-operated stores in the next year, up dramatically from its previous plan for 100 closures, a sign the coffee shop operator continues to struggle with the faltering U.S. economy and its own rapid expansion. Seventy percent of the stores slated for closure had opened after the start of 2006, the company said in a statement. To put it another way, Starbucks is closing 19 percent of all U.S. company-operated stores that opened in the last two years, Chief Financial Officer Pete Bocian said during a conference call. About 12,000 workers, or 7 percent of Starbucks' global work force, will be affected by the closings, which are expected to take place between late July and the middle of 2009, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil said. Rest of the Story Here: http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080701/starbucks_closings.html I guess it's time to head to McDonald's for Iced Coffee for $1.89 (Which i think tastes better than sbux) :upsidedow |
no! say it isn't so :(
|
Thank Fuckin Gawd!!
Their coffee sucks anyway... |
there's rumors banks going bankrupt in the coming weeks, I hear GM is next...
|
first its cutting back on lattes, porn memberships arent too far down the what to cut back next list. :(
|
so 3.6% of their locations.
Having 3.6% of your locations of 16K fail doesn't sound too bad. |

Which seems about equivalent to what is happening in the porn industry |
I feel for the workers who might lose their job!:(

Personally, I can tell a difference in certain Starbucks coffee flavors and I prefer it over most other coffee. But, I always stick with the same thing which is regular ol' house blend. I'm a lover of dark roasted coffee but to me theirs just isn't very good. For that I like Folger's.
|
with the amount of stores they have, this is a drop in the bucket. maybe they are only cutting back to one store per block ;-)
|
love starbucks, they were just getting too many stores where they weren't needed
there are still plenty |

I like there chai tea lattes, but I wont miss them as trader joe's has chai tea latte in a carton, just add milk, I cant taste the difference and I get at least 6 drinks per carton.
Even mac donalds new coffee tastes better then regular coffee from starbucks imo. |
With the prices they charge, saw this coming a mile away.

as to what 'agenda' you are referring to, I have no idea. I really don't find the need to somehow tie every single event that transpires from espresso sales to automobiles into an election between three credible politicians and some MTV VJ personality who denies his own muslim upbringing. better luck next time :winkwink: |
I have three new stores open up near me, in recent months. Hope the one by my house doesn't get closed up. It's like night club with the number of people who are up late standing infront of it.

I have to wonder how much of this is the slowing economy and how much of it is just that there are too many starbucks. Two years ago the town I live in had zero starbucks. Now there are four of them. Two are in grocery stores, there is one in the parking lot of a grocery store that has a starbucks inside it and the other is in the middle of town. I live in a smaller town and I doubt there are enough people to really support 4 starbucks plus the other 3 coffee places that have opened in the last few years. When I drive by them I never see anyone in them and when I go into the store I rarely see anyone at the counter getting something.
So I think some of this is just overestimating how many stores they really needed. |
I saw this coming
|
There are 3 starbucks in this smallish outdoor mall.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...04678&t=h&z=18 One company owned, next to an Einstein Bagel also serving coffee. One in Target and one in Albertsons. I think they really fucked their brand in the ass by letting some of the goons at Target etc. represent it. Barnes and Noble was a great idea sure, but grocery store type patnerships are terrible. |
Ignore the map, I suck at teh google.

Bout time that JEW Company is starting to fail...

my vote more coffee beans! best coffee imo
there are two starbucks that opened close to my apt. first they are in the worst locations. hard to get in and out of, second there is a total of 5 parking spaces for the one. i think people saw the growth of coffee shops along popular areas and tried to make it themselves. starbucks (as well as many other "high brow" cafes) only work IMO where there is a lot of day time traffic. if you can find a nice sized industrial/business park, put a starbucks there, not beside a bank. there is a chipotle near where i used to rent an office in bev hills. place was ALWAYS packed during the week from business people going for lunch, as well as coffee bean and peets. on the weekend, rarely saw anyone there. thats the problem with these places i think is they just put them in bad locations and attract the wrong crowd. |
Hmm I wonder why.... about time they closed some stores - some stores were competing with another Starbucks!

Oh man if the one near my house goes out, I am going to be so bummed!
|
Good stuff. I can't stand Starbucks and all those people walking round drinking shit coffee! They are the McDonalds of high street drinks.
|
They have a very powerful brand. I don't drink their coffee but have respect for how they've built an empire from an everyday product. They're made it more than the product, it's an experience and status.
Amazing for something as simple as coffee :) |
