If you've used your ATM card at a 7-11 in the USA you're fucked

or could be kinda fucked.

This is some crazy shit.

Hackers broke into Citibank's network of ATMs inside 7-Eleven stores and stole customers' PIN codes, according to recent court filings that revealed a disturbing security hole in the most sensitive part of a banking record.

The scam netted the alleged identity thieves millions of dollars. But more importantly for consumers, it indicates criminals were able to access PINs ? the numeric passwords that theoretically are among the most closely guarded elements of banking transactions ? by attacking the back-end computers responsible for approving the cash withdrawals.

The case against three people in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York highlights a significant problem.

Hackers are targeting the ATM system's infrastructure, which is increasingly built on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and allows machines to be remotely diagnosed and repaire

There gonna be lots more of this shit.

This is what will happen if Osama is elected.

crockett 07-01-2008 10:57 PM

When did this happen? About a year ago I had someone try to steal $3k out of my bank out via my debit card.

They fucked up because they were greedy. They tried to send the money via western union and send $1,5k on the first transaction which was cleared. After that they tried tried another $1,5k which again was cleared at first but it triggered WU's fraud because of the two transitions so they were both put back into my account before I even knew it was gone.

The most fucked up part is WU didn't bother to contact my bank only reason I even found out about it, was because I noticed the transactions and had to call WU to see wtf was going on.

Lucky you. But you must have made some mistake which ended up having your debit card info compromised. If it was WU case, may be you fell for some email scam?

mikesouth 07-01-2008 11:12 PM

what kind of idiot runs mission critical software on windows?

bloggingseo 07-01-2008 11:13 PM

That is crazy. I'm glad I don't really like 7 11 even though there are several nearby and I never use their ATM machines.

DateDoc 07-01-2008 11:45 PM

i always use my atm card as a cc as the bank gives me $ back if i do

pr0 07-01-2008 11:54 PM

good i hope they go back to using normal atm's in 7-11's now

the reason they are open to hacking....is the fact that they are these HUGE western union/payroll cashing/atm/computers all-in-one

i just assumed this would happen since day 1 :2 cents:

WonderWoman 07-02-2008 12:03 AM

This would explain why Citibank has sent me two new ATM cards in the last year due to "security breaches".

Evil E 07-02-2008 12:10 AM

Just change your pin :)

lol damn sure no e-mail scam.. the only reason WU was involved is because that's where the thief used my card numbers. I've never used WU online. I can't be 100% but I assume someone must have used a card reader at a restaurant or something.

I never use my debit card online I just use it local for gas and at normal stores. Anything online I use a normal credit card.

People try to steal from my Debit Card sooo often that the bank locked me down to a $300 daily limit.

and my account is always "warm".. if they suspect someone might be stealing they lock the fucker up tighter than my asshole..

it's the most annoying thing ever.. Seems to always happen Friday afternoon right after the bank closes too.. leaves me without a card all weekend..

Fucking thieves can lick my balls..

dready 07-02-2008 08:47 AM

Holy shit, that is fucking huge. It just goes to show the inherent insecurity in the current ATM system. Magnetic stripe cards are 40 year old technology and it just can't keep up against modern threats. The banks have known about this for 20 years or so and still do nothing to upgrade.

The ISO working group that originally created the standards knew there was only one flaw that could bring down the system, that is; lack of customer faith in the system. That day seems to be approaching quickly.

TubeTitans_SusieQ 07-02-2008 08:51 AM

oh no......

V_RocKs 07-02-2008 10:19 AM

My 7-11's all have the shitty old school crap ATM's...

Good because they are not based on Microsoft.

ProducerCashDave 07-02-2008 10:23 AM

I'm never gonna use the atms at 7-11 again

sniperwolf 07-02-2008 10:27 AM

That's alarming! :disgust

Kudles 07-02-2008 12:30 PM
