Camping & the internet (seriously)

Okay, so I'm headed camping later this month (Lake Sonoma) and still want to be connected to be able to check my emails... at least a couple of times a day.

I've never been there but I'm pretty cell phone reception isn't that great if even available.

Anyone here have any recommendations on the best way to get service? Special antennas? One of those little cell phone booster sticker magnets they had on infomercials ages ago (the one you put over the battery)?

Wifi on a laptop or phone and go into town or the reception spot every other day or so if possible to check whatever it is you HAVE to check .

Or you could say "FUCK THE INTERNET" like I do and totally groove out on Mother Nature for a few days with no interruptions.

if you have a smartphone... anywhere you can get a signal you have internet... I love using PDANET on my laptop to use the phone as the modem and browse on the road.

Even while camping I've still had plenty of places with a signal. Your provider should have maps available about the "coverage area"

heh. i go camping to get away from technology. it's nice to be in the woods for a few days with no cell service, no computers, and little to no communication with the outside world.

nothing but a lake, a fishing rod, and a big bag of grass. fuck the internet connection.

As the proud owner of a C Class RV I use my treo 700wx on sprint and my oqo 02 with wireless evdo a wan built in also on sprint

The only negative is that I am forced to carry two data plans ... one for the treo and one for my oqo

no clue how I have lived without either

fuck the data plan, get a sprint SERO with the base 500 minutes and unlimited data/txt for $30/mnth then have a credit union account for 10% off your bill, after being with them a while you can stack loyalty discounts and have it as low as $20/mnth

Use PDANET and it doesn't get detected as a PC-Link then toss in something like ICS and you can even share it with multiple computers. in most areas I get 600-800K connections and around some big cities I even get faster. 600K frequently out in the sticks. Yes I've done this all over the place using the laptop in the car using an inverter to stay powered up. Carefully select the phone though cause it can make a HUGE difference in speed.

Well I dont know how desolate your area is, but I have a cabin in rural NJ, and about 1-2 miles away, there is a house with an unsecured wireless network thats off of the main road, and the signal is able to reach the road. I got a PSP, and those come with Internet browsers (they are pretty good too, but they don't support flash). One day I pulled over on the side of the road and checked my emails, :1orglaughl.

Don't go camping if you want to be always online.. Camping is fun so forget your work first just do it when you get back :D

:1orglaugh The whole point of going camping.. is to get away from all the phones, internet and other distractions of modern world...

Do set it up, if you use Verizon, it will work there! I've never been but my friend sitting here has. (Assuming it's the same place) and his blackberry worked.
