For the design and layout you need to learn the basics of CSS..

Wish I could learn how to do that.....

Go to Design->Theme editor

You should have sidebar.php or something like that.. Maybe that part is in some different page or main index template..
In order to put images/banners there you only need to insert the right code at the right place.. If you have HTML/CSS experience shouldn't be hard..

I can help you out some more if you like, but I wont do it for free, my time is limited :)

well, in most cases you want to modify the sidebar, the footer or the header

ftp to your sites, go to wpcontent (I think) -> themes -> open the current theme -> download all the files and keep them in a back up direcotry on your hard drive. Then play with the files you want to modify, fe modify the sidebar, upload and see what happens, if you screw up you have the back-up copy, so you can play around as much as you wish

What exactly do you need to know?

You have what looks like a two collumn theme. In wordpress... Depending on what version your using....

Click on presentation, then widgets.....
-- Or --
Click on design, then widgets....

In this screen you can quickly add html code to the side bars.

Currently it looks like you have a widget called "affiliates". Why? We don't call programs "affiliates" when dealing directly with the surfer. Call them "favorite sites" or something.

mynameisyep the best thing you can do is learn a little CSS - you will really find it useful mate.
