using Laptops only

it's been years since I bought a desktop computer, laptops are so powerful nowadays that I can do everything I need with power to spare in a laptop (I'm not into video rendering or anything like that though, but I'm thinking you could do that as well with the right machines)

on the other hand, it is amazing how much power you can get in a desktop for nearly no money though, but portability and a nice all in one unit wins out for me anyways

i bought a laptop about 2 years ago to replace my desktop and wore it down in about a year. replacing parts is a pain in the ass. i bought the docking station, dualhead2go (for dual monitors), and all the jazz. figured it was easier than trying to sync up my desktop with my laptop again.

im due for a new computer soon, and think ill get anohter desktop. I have a macbook pro, but dont put a lot of use into it, just daily stuff and take it on the road. cost a chunk of change and want to make it last

I work from a simple 15" laptop without an extra monitor and slowly but surely its killing me. Impossible to work with Photoshop and such things without an additional 22" TFT....

got two 17" laptops and a big external monitor too, after using 17" for years I can't stand the little 15.4" screens:2 cents:

I haven't bought a desktop in 6 years, and I probably won't ever again.

I don't even use mice anymore.

I run everything off of my laptop. Monitor, keyboard and Wacom tablet.

I'm a laptop guy...

payd2purv 07-10-2008 10:59 PM

I use my mbp for everything..

When i'm at my desk I dock it...

It's awesome to be able to use the same computer at the desk or on the couch... I think that has killed my back tho...

It does have its limitations tho..

I need a special adapter to do dual monitor, I need a powered usb hub, desktop space, etc..

Save your eyes, get a desktop with a monitor at least 22"....or at least get the monitor

d-null 07-10-2008 11:47 PM

having dual monitors is a great thing if you haven't tried it before..... can get more work done, keep things better organized while you are working on projects, have an rdp open in the separate monitor, all kinds of things that help productivity...... even online poker is more fun with two monitors

Depends on what you are doing. I would be very unproductive on a laptop. Laptops don't have large 30" monitors, full size keyboards and RAID.

sony vaio ar series 17" does it all

Totally agree with you!

I hate working on laptops. I'm too used to my dual screen set up. I'm due a new laptop tho coz my old one was only for when I was on vacation or stuff like that but recently I used it a bit more for some stuff and its dying on me. I bought it 4 years ago and never had a problem. Gonna buy a new one tho just for on vacation. Something small and light.
