Gas Station ATM/Card Reader Likely Rigged in New ID Theft Case
California's South Bay area is reeling from yet another wave of ID theft from ATM/card reader machines

MAY 29, 2008 | Debit card customers in California?s South Bay area are again on alert after another wave of identity thefts that could be the result of a rogue card reader.
----------------------------------------

Someone is dinging my debit card at Bank of America ATMs for 500 a pop almost daily in San Diego. 500 Friday - 500 Sunday and 500 about an hour ago grrrrrr

Use cash for gas people if you can or stay the fuck away from Arco's

:disgust :disgust :disgust :disgust

Arco is a cash/debit gas station. i remember about a year ago when they start putting up these annoying covers over the buttons to help you hide your pin number. good job that did :1orglaugh

It's not the covers though - Here's how it goes down...

Someone replaces the card reader at the pump or that stand/atm looking thing. You swipe your card and enter your pin. The reader records the info on the strip of your card.

Then they take that info and make a dupe card and sell it along with your pin number.

I have my card on me, in my pocket but someone in San Diego RIGHT THIS SECOND is hitting BofA atms taking my money out.

Sly... I'm sure they can do the same with credit cards, just don't need the pin. Never the less, the problem is with the ARCO's so go somewhere else or use cash if you can. Thank god the banks giving me my money back tomorrow

ProducerCashDave 07-14-2008 01:28 PM

I used the atm at an arco yesterday :Oh crap

Imortyl Pussycat 07-14-2008 01:32 PM

payd2purv 07-14-2008 01:33 PM

This happens to me atleast once a month.

MeganS 07-14-2008 01:34 PM

Happened to me 2 weeks ago!!! and since i had my card in my wallet and was using it myself ... they had run through almost 2k before i noticed!

Took 10 days to get it back from the back and 5 days for a new card ... it sucks!!

Your pin and ATM card get jacked once a month?

You would probably be in jail for fraud if it did. :)

Evil E 07-14-2008 01:36 PM

Best thing to do is to use a Credit Card because the CC company will give you your money back past something like 50$.... it might not be the case with debit(that is your money in your account, not the company's money) so be careful.

Another tip is to change your NIP often, and only use the ATM's inside your bank locations.

http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/atmcamera.asp

Basically, thieves modify the existing ATM equipment with their own equipment to snatch your PIN and card numbers.

A “skimmer” is placed over the existing ATM card slot and when you insert your card, the information is transmitted to the thieves who are possibly sitting in a car nearby.

Additionally, a wireless camera is mounted inside the brochure holder and positioned to record your PIN number when you enter it. So take a second look when you’re at the ATM next time, does anything look suspicious?

I never ever use my debit card except in emergencies to get cash. Credit cards only.

tiger 07-14-2008 04:08 PM

Debit cards are fucking horrible. I never use mine.

sicone 07-14-2008 04:10 PM

This has been happening for a while now and not just at Arco gas stations

SiMpLe 07-14-2008 04:14 PM

I am now cash only for gas from here on out - I talked to the bank again and he said that they have had several cases lately to where the people working at the stations are stealing numbers too. So if you go in and pay your not safe there either. He said my case was for sure a skimmer though since they duped the card.

Yea he pointed that out as well - Safest thing is just to have 40 bucks on you for gas or munchies. I'm done using my cards, lesson learned sigh

This happened to my ex years ago.... the bank flatly denied that it ever happened.

They said you have your card and your PIN - tough shit.

They deposited 5K in fake checks and took out all the cash......

Sucks!

And people are always saying that crooks are dumb...yeah right.

jact 07-14-2008 04:25 PM

I had my debit card cloned at Best Buy last year, really pissed me off. My bank's security blocked the card immediately, but didn't feel the need to call and inform me. Left me at a checkout unable to pay for my items. These card cloners are annoying!

marketsmart 07-14-2008 04:38 PM

this is the reason why i siphon gas from peoples cars instead of getting at the gas stations... :thumbsup

Princess Ellisa 07-14-2008 05:32 PM
