No more rebills - is this true?

wtf is with all this no more rebills bs I am reading here - I searched through the threads I can't determine what is going on here. This topic seems to be on the minds of many I speak to these days and their paranoia is getting to me so I'd like some clarification from the billing companies etc.

So far all I have got from reading is that someone is claiming Visa will be no longer processing rebills from a certain date on.

Rumor. Asked A. Martin of Globill and never heard back. It's not a good sign.

Processors have no reason to tell us the truth until they find a solution anyway. Call Visa and ask them! ;-)

I'm surprised to find this thread buried with only 1 reply today... am I the only one interested in this?

Nobody knows. Some tiny no name processor spread a rumor. Who cares. Would you like a thread of pure speculation? Well then, you came to the right place.

I contacted Glo-Bill's ROLI and about a rumour that rebills will end
when VISA rolls out its VISA 3D security program next April.

Aparently with VISA 3D there will be no chargebacks allowed and it will be mandatory however rebills will no longer be allowed requiring customers to re-sign up every month.

He wrote back advising me that it was true and shit-canned the person who posted it for posting confidential information and refunded all his customers for the month or something.

I asked somene from website billing, I think it was and they told me rebills are fine but won't be protected from chargebacks under the program.

So, Who knows. I say hope for the best and plan for the worst....

We know we won't hear anything definative until at least a week before it comes into effect.

If anyone is not feeling the icy winds of change blowing up their kilts...

It won't last forever like it is, regulations and technology will change it. Time to think a little more broadly about what it means to be a webmaster and what your revenue sources are.

I know a lot of guys who used to spend $5k every weekend who now lament they didn't save it all.

We're going to go through some tough times....
I think that the small paysite will disappear, because their business model will no longer be applicable. You build a database of members and aim for a client database of 1000 members leaving you an average of $15 per month per member after commissions, bandwidth and content cost, now; if we can't automatically rebill, and if the member's has to actually re-sign up every month; then it's going to be very, very tough to survive, you will have to have great, exclusive content to keep your members coming back every month.
just my :2 cents:

AcidMax 10-23-2002 01:20 PM

I think in that instance prices for sites would also go up and the users would be forced to pay more, which could be good for the webmasters, but then again it could be bad depending on the sites you run.

I am sure that if Visa does this they will hurt their income as well, which would not be a wise move for them. Think of all the money they make from recurring billing on pornsites.

If this happens watch and wait for another string of cards to pop up.

it won't be a problem, it will just change things...

recurring discount memberships on checks.

one-time 2-3 month memberships on credit/900.

problem solved.

Companies like AOL will never have billing problems, they will continue as normal. A company with that much money makes its own rules.

I think what hitman is saying which may be true (and which would mean that most people are simply STRETCHING a statement to doomsday proportions) is that VISA is rolling out their 3D billing which requires a secret pincode and prevents anyone from disputing a charge (since the code is verified direct by VISA...or something.)

However as I believe Clay said this will only be available on 3D enabled gateways, implying it is not REQUIRED but it is optional. If VISA users suddenly don't want to sign up to pornsites because they're not 3D enabled I will be very surprised. Surfers will enter their details nearly anywhere, as evidenced by the widespread fraud throughout the internet; those Russian carders don't steal statements out of the mail!

3D will be good for merchants selling products, eliminating fraud. IPSPs and people who have shitloads of rebills probably won't go out of business any time soon, since as you mentioned VISA has huge clients like AOL, Earthlink, AT&T, etc who all have monthly billing without verification. Hell I think my insurance company offers that option!

right. unless this would only apply to the high-risk category.
