How can I tell if my router is fucked or it's the provider?

I'm in Thailand (aka Internet Hell), and my connection is just enough to let me use IM and get on a few sites here and there.

The company keeps telling me it's my router, and won't go any further than that with the problem. I can hardly surf, can't download or upload anything for the past several days.

How can I check so I can let them know what's up. The monkeys that they are.

Help!

Buy new router. Keep receipt. If it works better. Problem solved. If not, return it.

Tell ISP where to pound it and to roll a truck toots.

plug directly into the cable modem or whatever.... unplug the router out of the picturee

That would be my suggestion.

Have you tried to connect your PC directly to cable modem (or what you have) without a router?

Mikaxxx 07-19-2008 03:24 PM

Sorry guys, I mean to say MODEM, not router. They are saying my modem isn't working right.

My bad. Mmmkay.

I had a similar issue with my ISP yesterday, finally after rebooting several times it was resolved but still annoying when that happens

Reak AGV 07-19-2008 04:40 PM

Call them up and tell them to come over and fix the issue... they'll be there tommorow. aftnernoon. if you're lucky :)

Do a constant ping to both modem IP and modem's gateway IP and see if packets drop from one or both.

On windows command line: ping -t IP_ADDRESS

in 90% of the World it's telephone line -> router -> PC

there's no "cable modem or whatever", I can bet 6 of my nuts that that's the case in Thailand as well

routers are the same all over the globe, it's just that in most of the countries you're better off with ADSL which is why you get your tel. line -> router -> PC set up

I could be wrong of course

Hope you have more than 6 nuts... You need a layer 2 bridge (modem) and layer 3 routing (router).

Hit and trial buddy. Ask them for a working test modem, ISP's technical dept. guys should have it with them. If it works fine, replace your modem with new. If not .. you know what to do then.

They are useless especially if its TOT. Have you reset the modem? Log into it and check the settings. It should show you possible download/upload speeds. Plus you should check your phone line for disturbance with all those fucking flooding in that season, remember where those cables thrown?
