Which Canon do you prefer.

Canon XSi or 40D. XSi has 12mp cmos. 40D has a 10mp but faster, better body, etc. Also, which lense would you recommend for standard portraits, perhaps some sports stuff.

Thanks.

Costco has the 40d with lense, flash, case, and book for $1449 right now :)
We picked it up.

We don't do anything all that professional... but we love it. The difference in outdoor shots was PHENOMENAL.
We're still playing with lighting though.

I read a bunch of reviews and picked up the 40D with an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for $1040

One important thing to remember, image stabilisation only stops camera shake, not the motion of objects in front of it. If you do a hand-held telephoto shot at say 1/50th shutter speed with IS, the background will be stable but any movement (eg people) will be blurred.

The 40D is a good body but bear in mind that lenses are worth more (and will cost more for the good ones) in the long run. :)

We use a 40D with a Canon 70-210 f2.8L lens for about 90% of our shoots. The other lens we use is the 28-200 zoom.

the standard is fine, but i myself plan on making better than standard pictures... weddings, nudies, scenery...

I have a 20D, and although it is old and bulky, I love the photos that I get with it.
