Just checking... that's what a mainstream guy just told me in a conversion about the competition in adult.

Holy fuck. That's a company that's gonna be out of business fast.

TheDoc 07-23-2008 01:57 PM

Budget? Maybe built up to.

That's about $30k a month in updates for 2.5+ years. Yes, lots of single sites have spent 1-2 million in content.

Evil E 07-23-2008 02:07 PM

Thanks for the info, but that's not the same thing TheDoc, because they start the site with a couple of scenes... let's just give an example lets say it costs 50 000$ to start the website, then as the money comes in, they re-invest their 30 000$ a month. Might take a couple months to get their money back so you're talking about 50-150k budget, not 1 or 2 millions.

Also please post examples of those sites if you know any...

I'd say AFF cost a lot ot build over time, but it also brought in a lot of revenues so I wonder what kind of budget they started it with.

I'd say dating and cam sites would cost the most(from the programming standpoint).

XPays 07-23-2008 02:09 PM

any vod site built from scratch will cost 7 figures if you want to have a lot of titles and data and infrastructure and staff

ravo 07-24-2008 06:14 AM

I know of quite a few sites that have budgeted $1M+ for traffic/sales alone. But, I'm not going to name any of them....

A couple of months to get their money back is being generous too btw. Don't forget the billers %, affiliate payouts, any site partners, bought traffic generation spots, etc etc...not to mention if the site even sells. Unless the content is super unique or hot and even then it depends on the quality of the traffic hitting the site, I'd venture to say it would take a good 8 months to a year before you would be looking at black ink. I may be wrong tho.

Porn.com budgetted over 9MM in just acquisition cost, let alone production/staff.

Nobody is gonna tell a kid like you about this. You know them or you don't. Let me guess, you are a 18 y o professional and your friend is a 23 y o big shot. :)))

Gator 07-24-2008 08:31 AM

More like nobody is going to tell a stranger, maybe? I don't see why you have to try to insult the person here. Anyway I think more money is spent on marketing than content.

A monster site would budget 1-2 million a year in content & startup - nobody would spend that much on content monthly on one site. If you plan on going that big, a huge startup cost would be hosting, the staff to process that much content, video machines, ect ect... easily spending 1-2 million to try and start big.

Hanco, wasn't it? They spend/lost millions trying to go big from the start.

I spend $30-$50k to open paysites, that's a shit load more than a few scenes. I make my money from the content in a lot of areas other than the paysite directly.

But I'm a small fish when you have plenty of sites that spend that much on just monthly updates. So, of course the budget for the site is easily over 1-2 million.

Marketing costs is probably least expensive part of a paysite/program.

raven1083 07-24-2008 09:10 AM

well that amount was small for making a great porn site

klaze 07-24-2008 09:25 AM

People lie and exaggerate especially people who work in online.

tranza 07-24-2008 09:33 AM

:2 cents:

No shit. I started a whole fucking porn company with $3000.00 5 years ago. That was including camera(s) and doing 10 shoots (we get 8-10 set per). We do very well considering we are still a small production company, and have grown every year.

Anyone spending that much on a single porn site, much less company, especially without some serious players behind it like a Wizzo or others with industry knowledge and infrastructure, is insane.

You simply will have a VERY difficult time trying to recoup that investment in a short period of time, if ever.

who 07-24-2008 09:41 AM

1 million?

It depends on the delivery method

Evil E 07-24-2008 04:28 PM

Interesting, so what kind of percentile do these high budgets sites are in the grand scheme of the adult sites?

Can you show an example of a pay site(not a program, just a site) that cost that much to start up(and please do not include the domain name cost)?

Yes but with that kind of investment you usually make your money back soon enough.

If you buy traffic, you won't get your money back 1 year later if you know what I mean.

So in my opinion much of that money that you spend comes back at you pretty soon.

Forest 07-24-2008 05:01 PM

Ill do the design for them for 500k

a bargin

:thumbsup
