Anyone here edit on Avid?
I've been looking to make the jump from Vegas into a more serious editing program, I feel like I've hit the limits of Vegas. **
I'm extremely fast in Vegas, and I can edit almost as fast as I can think, but I do feel there are color limitations, and HD rendering issues, and the latest version's print to tape are becoming as difficult as Final Cut. There are just a lot of little things that are now starting to wear thin on me. I'm looking to get Avid Media Composer. Anyone familiar with it? Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Also... what's the difference between the education versions and the non-education versions an why the HUGE difference in price? ** nothing personal Tony... just wanna try something new. |

I've been getting black frames on long renders. At first I didn't think my machine could handle it, then I found out it could be an m2t/mts problem, then found out it could be the way it was originally shot. I occasionally get red frames as well. The problem is it's real inconsistent. If it were always the same problem under the same circumstances then I could understand and then I would know how to fix it or what to avoid, but it's very random.

i see people editing here in avid liquid 7 and that one sucks donkey balls handling HDV mpegs. everything takes ages

they share my opinion i personally still use Ulead Media Studio Pro 8 which lets me edit HDV even on my laptop. but thats of course not expensive and hyped enough to be "cool" ;) |

Everyone wants FCP or Avid editors. My problem with FCP is 1) it's on a Mac... and 2) you can't simply hook up a deck and print out to tape. You have to successfully set a series of settings which could have thousands of variables but only one will actually work. I haven't even ried editing on it yet. I only tried printing to tape and after that I vowed to never even try it. |
i bough final cut for my mac and it can't handle captured sony hdv mpegs - once again back to Ulead. but i have to admit i dont deal with tapes anymore after capturing, i only deliver files - also for authoring

My DVD clients need tape output for foreign sales, and they require I print to the big DVCAM tapes. For my web clients I deliver files as well. |
Get the newest Kona card and stick with Final Cut Pro. I have a full Avid suite collecting dust since FCP made it debut.
|
Also if your using Panasonic P2 Cards, get P2 Genie....

Can't help on this one. Everything other than Premiere that I've tested has felt backwards and weird to me, and Premiere does everything I need with no issues. Ive used it since 2000 or 2001 somewhere around there. Too set in my ways to change now lol

I edit HDV shot footage every day and encode to files and also render and print to two or three hour DVCam tapes in my Sony deck to make standard definition movie masters from the Premiere Pro CS3 timeline routinely with no issues.

Hey red
I am using the gvhd700 deck as well as the new mu35 for progressive shit... I am on final cut... I got a chance to play with avid at NAB... what I found better than avid that tons are going to is Smoke from autodesk... that is rediclous sick... but it's also 100k have... I got a house here with avid in it if you want to come play with it... you will do fine with it your an editor... once an editor always an editor I would not say FCP over avid or avid over FCP at that point I Think it's personal prefrence.. Jackson used both on lord of the rings.. choen bro's use only mac... so I would say they can both do what is needed |

As it turns out though, It's not really that I prefer Avid over FCP.. it's that I actually WANT To learn Avid. I want to start cutting everything on Avid for other reasons. :winkwink: |
Premiere FTW...
just sayin... |

I'm not good at FTW lingo. :( |
I stick to primarily premiere for editing nowadays, and after effects for my format dumps...
Worked with Avid, FCP, Vegas, premiere nails everything I need it do, and aftereffects takes care of the rest. |

whats funny is 99% of the people posting about this and that and this and that... will only use 10% of what the NLE is capiable of... I know why you want to learn avid.. I don't blame you... in california any post house that is anything is avid.. if you don't know it you are nothing to them... you can give the best product via final cut but if that house is not on final cut your useless to them... I think you will learn avid very very fast... it's so much like liquid old school pinnacle... I think you will pick it up within a month.. at that point it's just where everything is and some order of operations are different... Id go avid but I like to edit as I roll... if I spend a few days outside of "the box" I got my macbookpro with fcp on it so im in my rhelm of what I know and need... I would say more studios use avid than FCP.. another reason Im sure you want to learn it... but with you I don't think the word learn I would say get used to... have you seen smoke? rediclous features.. it's like having avid, aftereffects, color, motion, plus anything else all in one.... http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet...112&id=5562809 this is where it's all going to.. I sat in on this hott chick editor from cali at a demonstrastion at NAB she was so fast but she edits for ESPN so all the fancy shit espn does on the fly is done with smoke... it will cut workflow time in half... but it's 100k or more |
WOW! Nice.
Hey Dirty what's your ICQ or email. I wanna ask you about a flash compression issue I'm having. |
I've been trained professional in avid and even if you never use half it's features it's the best editing program out there, and I also use Vegas as well. It's well worth taking time to use.
