If you thought the most important thing in your wallet for having sex was either a condom or your credit card, you might be wrong.


Eli Dancy founded STFree Certifications in 2004, and his "Safe Sex Licence" is catching on. About 15,000 people, and 6,000 New Yorkers have a personal ID card that allows their sexual partners to verify the date of their last STD test and the results. It only takes a phone call to the 800 number on the back of the Safe Sex Licence.

The photo ID is not a license to have risk-free unprotected sex, Mr. Dancy said, but it should be thought of in relative terms. Someone who has been tested recently, and is concerned about their status and their partners', is likely to make a safer choice.

STFree Certifications is a small non-profit and does much of its registration out of the back of their well-decorated van. They recently partnered with The Black AIDS Institute in their effort to test the HIV/AIDS status of a million African-Americans over the next year.

While it may always be uncomfortable to ask a potential partner about their sexual history, the Safe Sex License can make it easier to bring up, and harder to lie.

I think they need to allow people to have those instant home HIV tests so people can test themselves or each other on the spot, the FDA in other countries approved it why not here

Good call and it is a gold standard test too many clinics offer it now but the politicians are worried that some moron will see a positive test and commit suicide (Darwin at work baby) so it remains illegal. They have to protect us you know

Close to half the population is already infected with some kind of venereal disease, most commonly genital warts or herpes, but that's a pretty decent idea for the rest of us who are still clean.

I don't know that I'd pull it out on a date, but I know my clients like knowing that I am clean - always have been. I don't have sex with my clients, but I do some pretty hardcore stuff, like heavy piercing, and my clients are comforted a bit by the fact that I've got one of them notarized certificate thingies from the place in the valley that tests the porn stars.

I'd still be selective and protected, but I might consider picking one up, if they're local and affordable.

That is just idiotic! I mean, it's a nice try at keeping STD free and all, but c'mon, is EVERYONE going to be getting STD tests after every single person they fuck??? FUCK NO!
