careful what you wish for I guess

I have always wanted to go storm chasing. Went to a museum in Chicago today to see their exhibit on earthquakes, volcanoes and tornadoes.

Well, now it appears I am stuck in one. Typing from candlelight and using my wireless card.

It is nuts here.

This is storm season. My favorite season, to tell you the truth... I love it.

C_U_Next_Tuesday 08-04-2008 07:36 PM

I have been in several Hurricanes and tornados ( some resulting from hurricanes)..its pretty intense and can be scary depending on the severity of the storm or tornado.

I have yet to experience a tidal wave or earthquake

baddog 08-04-2008 07:40 PM

I would like it if it was daylight, but this darkness makes it impossible to see what's happening, except by the flashes of lightning.

Ice 08-04-2008 07:42 PM

can you give me a call baddog

C_U_Next_Tuesday 08-04-2008 07:53 PM

The night storms are the worse...seeing a huge tornado coming at you by brief flashes of lightening can me a bit unnerving.

They dont last forever Baddog..it will be over soon.

Sosa 08-04-2008 07:54 PM

we got stuck here downtown. ran into the bottom of one of the marina city towers and stayed in there for 45 minutes with some other people. I'll give you a call in the morning about dinner.

Stay safe buddy!

TeenDeja 08-04-2008 08:24 PM

Usually tonadoes dont actually make it to big cities, they form in areas that are open and dont have a resistance on them growing, unless the tornado is just huge and powerful or been coming for awhile, it will die out when it hits the city.....

All well and good, but I am not exactly in a big city right now. Took a look outside with a pen light. Suffice it to say, these before pictures are significantly different than what daylight will reveal.

My 60 year old mother, who just had a knee replaced also happens to be a recently retired science teacher. She keeps entering some contest that runs along with March Madness where the idea is for educators to predict the weather in the towns where the teams are from at the time of their matches. The top prize is to go storm chasing. Year after year she came second. I have been happy about this because the idea of her going storm chasing scared me. This year, she won. I was getting ready to worry when she found out that since she had retired before the contest was over she wasn't eligible for the top prize because that had to go to an 'active' teacher.

V_RocKs 08-05-2008 03:16 AM

I love that...

Hank_Heartland 08-05-2008 07:24 AM

The pics were from before I took ownership of the house. That rain gutter issue was resolved immediately. The fence, well, that is how they had all of them set up.

I will when I get back to LA. Between shows, dinners, no electricity, too much trouble.

Still no electricity. Decided to hotel it tonight.

There was no structural damage to the house. Biggest issue was food that had to be tossed due to the lack of electricity. One tree had a pretty large branch broken than came crashing down on neighbor's garden, but they seemed to take it in stride.

I have to admit, the trees kind of surprised me. When the tornado hit they were all pretty much horizontal, and one was partially leaning on the roof. This morning the leaner had pretty much straightened up.

Some of the neighbors did not fare so well with trees falling on cars, lakes formed in their front yards, and lots of split trees.

I will put up some pics after I get home-sweet-home.

Thanks god in am at place where BIG thunder and lot of rain sometimes, is biggest shit to hit you...

Bird 08-06-2008 04:19 AM

Chicago has always been a place where you get all four seasons in one day...

Wake up to a sunny 90 degree day then about noon the clouds roll in then it starts to rain and snow, after that the wind comes and blows it all away and at last a light breeze like a nice spring evening.

I have walked into a store and come out 15 minutes later with a 20 degree drop.
