Hosting Companies to AVOID? Name and shame if you dare.

I'm setting up a 150 domain project and need 10 new hosting companies (virtual hosting).

Haven't bought new hosting in 3 years, so what's been happening, who suck?

I've just fooked out adulthost.com for being a total pile of shite with no support whatsoever.

Ran through some threads on here about hosting, and have a few in place, but need to know which are lemons.

moeloubani 08-06-2008 03:24 PM

from my experience so far, http://phatservers.com/ rocks

Lycanthrope 08-06-2008 05:01 PM

CunningStunt 08-06-2008 05:05 PM

^LOL Lycanthrope.

Yes, I had a horrible time with dreamhost as well back in 2004. Was only with them a few weeks before pulling the pin.

Get a server and a bunch class c ip's, Getting a bunch of virtual accounts is a waste and a half...

You got your choice between Jim over at Techie Media, Lloyd with Got Web Host...

This is coming from a guy who has had a box in every data center in the US at one point or another...

I shall take after Lycanthrope

O h, lets see, I
C an easily name
3 hosts I would not host with.

One sounds like ReamHost and the other like WebHair.

Same here. I've had so many dedicated servers in various places around the U.S. I have officially been stable at TechieMedia for several months now and don't plan on moving.

x-rate 08-06-2008 05:20 PM

Tried 3ix dot org about a month ago... After a week according Alertra my site was up 83% of the time... asked a refund and got it... support there really suck. Posted a support ticket for an inquiry about their firewall and got a reply that they are fixing their dns and situation should be back to normal in next hours. Actually im with hostgator and really happy.

Iron Fist 08-06-2008 05:23 PM

No one mentioned that other host that sounds like "nervage" yet? Hmm... slipping people.. slipping...

I've got the e-mails to prove it.

I thought doing that wouldn't split the IP's up enough :-s I plan on interlinking some of them, so need different IPs.

If I can do it all on the one host, that would be superb.

Scratches head and goes off investigating.

pimp3611 08-06-2008 05:49 PM

Good Hosts: ATCI, Phatservers, Cyberwurx, A1

Stay away from Gotwebhost - Loyd is a piece of shit.

Varius 08-06-2008 05:58 PM

I'd personally recommend OC3, I never had any issues with them with my personal servers. Is signed up when Caz was there and didn't follow him only because I saw no need, but I'm sure his new thing Right Hosting is probably a solid recommendation as well :thumbsup

Another I haven't tried myself but I have heard good things from people for SEO using baddog's GotWeb Host.

Take a look at our IP range... 19 different class C on same account !

Steve Awesome 08-06-2008 06:05 PM

InternetConnection.net = garbage. They went so far as to bill me for excessive bandwidth six months after the fact with the lame ass excuse that their software that measured bandwidth hadn't been working for several months. Mother fuckers. I call them Intershit Connection whenever I think of them.

Prohosters / Carpathia's rates were fair at first but as years went by the rates from new hosts for a dedicated box could get me 4X the server and 10X bandwidth at 33% of the cost. They told me to leave if I found a better deal (and I did). Fuck 'em.

AnniKN 08-06-2008 06:16 PM

I love www.surpasshosting.com, been with them since 2004 and they've taken good care of me.

I had a terrible experience with www.zenex5ive.com when I needed an additional server and tried them, but it might've been bad luck.

pornask 08-06-2008 06:18 PM

I'd been royally screwed in the ass by Servage. Their policy is to promise you heaven and if your site grows, they'll suspend it and POST THEIR LINK ON IT. This is how they grow their business. They attract webmasters with promising websites, webmaster works hard to make the site a success and when the turning point comes, they take what you have worked so hard for for themselves. leaving you with a blank star and need to start all over again.

Second worst is HostICan - fuck I don't even want to start on this piece of shit host. I mean... fuck!

I've been safely with Mojo for almost a year. I'm good now, but I got lured to host with world's worst hosts in the past

Yup.. same here.. I moved one my sites from Dreamhost to Servage... hey I didn't know any better back then... and on the second day after the DNS updated, I get an e-mail saying my site is shut down from using too much server resources. Clustered hosting my ass... clusterfuck is more like it.

Needless to say I had to lose almost a week of traffic, because I had to update DNS again to point back to my original provider... but then I looked at some of the major sites that have never been down and did some IP to name lookups to see where and who they were hosting with and http://www.colo-cation.com was one of them.

After speaking to Chris on the phone, he had my virtual set up same day and i've never been happier over the last year and a half... solid uptime, no issues, and fast. :2 cents:

Randomonium 08-06-2008 07:30 PM

DWHS - worst host ever

DHWS - worst host ever

Net Money 08-06-2008 08:11 PM

Like a few others already mentioned I have been with several other hosts and they all had negative issues. Stay clear from webair, oc3, pacific rack, dreamhost, alphared. All are up and down like a cheap hooker and useless support eventhough they have lots of paid off board spammers...LOL I am currently at Techie Media and couldn't be any happier also mojo is good, nat net is good but to expensive, for virtuals I would say baddog is decent and also phatservers.:2 cents::2 cents:

Yeap... back in the days when I believed all the claims about "virtual servers" I was absolutely amazed by Servage ... but the fuckers neglected to mention that after hitting 400k hits your site gets disabled for consuming too much resources... 400k hits is easily achievable when every single image you have in your site counts as a freaking hit ... ... they kept updating their fucking virtuals and my scripts went to shit... lost a lot of data that way..:disgust

Agreed. I've been with them years. Top notch service.

Only other I would consider at this time would be Brad, the baldie, Mitchell at Toejo hosting.

:winkwink:

mikesouth 08-06-2008 09:00 PM

I wont say anything bad but I will say Jason at carolinanet has more than done right by me.

highly recommend them from my experience with them

I had bad experience with Webair virtual account and I had a good damn awful time with a dedicated server at OC3.

Now I'm more than happy at Phat Servers - phenomenal uptime and great support.

Dave_Lethal 08-06-2008 09:17 PM

DWHS.net sucked, the never answered the phone and barely returned emails

qxm 08-06-2008 09:29 PM

How is Phat Servers for Virtuals? Do they provide IPs in different Cs or are all of them in one C?

BT 08-06-2008 09:52 PM

I hope you squashed out all the lemons cuz there are allot out there. Don't over look the best in the business give www.isprime a go and make no mistake about it you will be satisfied and then some. Great from support to service.:2 cents:

We specialize in multiple IP's spread over multiple C's. We provide dedicated IP's as well (on our virtual accounts) so you don't have to worry about who you are sharing them with.

Klen 08-07-2008 09:18 AM

Btw CunningStunt do you have icq i working on similar project so maybe we could unite resources

I have been with Techie Media since they started I originally had a small virtual host back then now I have many servers with them. I have used many hosting companies for various things in the end I have found no better then techiemedia

Jim and Wayne are top notch and they have so many techs on staff I never wait more then a few minutes for support tickets to be completed unless the actual task takes longer. Someone always jumps right on a ticket when I put one in.

webair 08-07-2008 09:39 AM

As for virtual, no clue. I like webair for dedicated servers. Stay away from servage and dreamhost!

Been with webair for over 6 yrs. They have been good never had down time issues and if there was a problem they are on it quick. I like I can pick up a phone and call.

I have to say, I got a virtual account with you guys a short while back, and so far, I'm not particularly impressed.

Support is nice and quick, but documentation is lacking, and having to send photocopies of your id for ssh access is just, well, laughable.

Good thing this thread is in August and not February of this year, or you'd be eating your shorts right about now on that offer..
