Will something nasty happen at the China Olympics?

With all the controversy surrounding the upcoming Olympics in China, do you think something bad will happen during the games?

I sincerely hope nothing does...but I'm old enough to remember Munich.

im guessing china is a hard country to pull shit in

they have probably threatened anyone of consequence in the area

broke 08-06-2008 07:54 PM

Something nasty? Other than the whooping Norway put on the US women's soccer team today?

Nah - I think the 100,000 plus troops they have amassed in Beijing are up to the task.

Like a plane crashing in that shiny new stadium?

LOL @ the smog comment. I can see someone attempting some stupid shit but not being very successful. When your country has 1.3 billion people in it you're bound to have a few loonies running around ( i.e. - the crazy fuck that beheaded/canibalized the guy on the bus in canada ). Aside from that I'm sure there'll be human rights type protests or something along those lines. Hopefully we don't have a repeat of Tiananmen Square :Oh crap.

The smog is unreal..they showed a TV shot outside the stadium today..visiblity was about 500ft at mid day..even pedestrians walking in the 200 ft range were hard to make out.

I honestly think these Olympics are going to be a bit of a farce, between the pollution, the sure to come doping scandals, lack of spectator attendance from other countries and a general feeling that the Chinese govt is watching every move anyone makes doesn't lend it self to creating the proper Olympic atmosphere.

I do plan to watch several specific events tho, but from all indications there is over 3600 hrs of Olympic TV programming so I think a fairly extensive DVR scheduling session will be in order...lol
the US TV Event Schedules are listed here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/

I'm sure the Chinese military is up to the challenge of keeping everyone safe...

I hope everything goes smoothly :)

I read somewhere they've taken half the cars off the road over there to help combat the smog...sounds like it ain't having much effect.

And apparently they've enlisted the aid of a few thousand 'volunteers' to clean up the shoreline from all the industrial scum and pollution that's built up.

We'll wait and see - but I'm willin' to bet Toronto would have been the far better venue for the games.

who fuckin knows

I mentioned Munich to a few people the other day. I seriously hope nothing happens but I have a bad feeling. I also worry about what happens *after* the games to anybody who caused a fuss in the country but couldn't be dealt with while the world was watching.

Why 08-07-2008 04:13 AM

i prey that something bad happens... im not hoping anyone get hurt. im just hoping someone helps to draw attention to all the shitty things that shitty government does on a daily basis both now and in their very shady history.

this would be the perfect time to draw attention to it all because china is under the microscope right now. Taiwan should claim their independence, etc. China is a big bully and their government is very murderous and controlling.

Sarah_Jayne 08-07-2008 04:40 AM

There has already been a terrorist (so they called it) attack and that was prior to the games even starting. All that needs to happen is things that aren't right in the city but a bit further out where the police aren't looking. Even with the one that already happened you had to know the gov't was hating that so men western media cameras were there.

Although I agree the Chinese gov't is guilty of a lot of bad things and needs some serious corrections - I don't agree the Olympics should be used as a venue to draw attention to the issues.

Why?

Because its unfair to the athletes of the world who have dedicated and trained their entire lives to compete on a world-class scale.

The world already knows of the atrocities committed by the gov't of China, and the government themselves are well aware of the world's opinions - do we need something bad to happen at the Olympics to further get this point across?

Do you think it would change anything after the Olympics have ended and faded from memory?

tranza 08-07-2008 06:47 AM

I hope nothing bad happens, but nobody knows what can happen!!

Agree with you completely.

Scott McD 08-07-2008 07:01 AM

Something will happen, but on what scale i have no idea... :2 cents:

Manowar 08-07-2008 08:02 AM

Hmmm, i think there will be because of the publicity

nekrom 08-07-2008 08:32 AM

Nothing will happen. The central Olympics area is so locked down it's not funny. Aside from the 100k+ troops, police, etc, they also have mobile anti-air artillery batteries, crazy stuff when you think about it. :)
