I read that the hands of ALL gymnasts rip and bleed, it's just the nature of the sport. All gymnasts who compete on a high level endure pain, ripped and bloody hands etc and that all of the stretching you see there is actually standard. That's what it takes to be the best.

hm, interesting... I guess thats how you build winners... Im sure in most western countries this would be considered exploitation of children. i do have to say some of these training exercises are way to harsh.

All gymnasts bleed and go through pain when they are training. I read other gymnasts saying that they bleed from their hands too, that's just how it is.

"They see their families once a year" doesnt that say it all? Basically if you are good the government owns you. All hands bleed etc but those kids are 4-8 years old in some of the shots.

All that didn't help them in this Olympics in women's gymnastics overall...USA took GOLD AND SILVER!

that's Communism at work - the world has chosen to put its rose colored glasses on for a few weeks regarding China - a mistake.

elite athletes in the US and elsewhere though also pay a high price and many leave their families at a young age to get better coaching etc and have their childhoods robbed from them not to mention their bodies put through things that aren't healthy for a young growing body in the long run. Female gymnastics seems to the worst sport for the physical and mental abuse because they're trying to build champions before they reach full adulthood - even the 20 year old American girls voices sound like midget voices - that ain't right.

Hard to watch, but not surprised

Most of the parents are honored to give up their child, it really sucks. Then again, those kids behave a lot better than the ones I see in countries where they don't know shit about discipline.

All gymnasts, I think started when they were kids and even younger, so it's not an issue.
It could be child abuse tho..but we can't say that, because gymnasts should start training at the early age.

Almost all gymnasts start very very young, and endure similar pain. I've seen similar movies from Russia, Romania etc. This is not as nearly isolated to China as you think it is.

See in america we have a choice of what we want to do. Most cannot understand it because
1: we would never treat our children like that
2: because we CHOOSE not to do it.

America did not start off where we are at now, we are a young country compared to Asia, Europe and the middle east. There is nothing stopping other countries from achieving what the US has except themselves.

There was a story this week where they talked about how the Romanians have lost their dominance in women's gymnastics because after the fall of communism they couldn't build these "gymnastics mills" anymore. The coach was complaining that the girls do too much text messaging and listening to Ipods to commit to it. Now that it is more something the girls choose to do as opposed to being forced into they don't do so well.

I don't see any Chinese athlete winning 8 gold medals... hmm.

If it's true, then that's too bad. But it looks like a 1 sided opinion just showing some people training in the gym along with their saddening commentary.

they shouldnt train the so hard until they are older, but maybe thats what it takes to be the best in the world. Im sure any hard training is painful but not permanent.

it should be someone that is old enough to know they want to do that.although the discipline could be a life lesson for sure!

It's not just about the Olympics you retards.

The Chinese often dominate many gymnastic events around the world. It is an honor for their family to have their child do this.

And don't even get started about the Chinese circus people. OMFG. You have not seen a circus until you have seen the Chinese do it. It's unlike anything you have ever seen. In fact, many of the entertainers from Vegas come from China and parts of Europe where such brutal training takes place.

It takes great sacrifice to achieve excellence. Doesn't matter from where they are from or what colors they fly, all athletes who have truly reached the top of their game, have sacrificed. It's just sad it has to be the way it is, however, for the Chinese and many other countries, this is not an issue.

We can't even spank our own kids in the USA anymore without risk of legal issues. LOL

The Chinese will run the world someday. Maybe in our lifetime. Get used to it. Have your kids start learning Mandarin today, they are gonna need it!!!!!
