Affiliate vs Sponsor?!

What do you call affiliate / sponsor programs? These two words are used all the time to mean the same thing, which do you prefer to call them?

Affiliate Program

papill0n 08-26-2008 11:38 PM

I call them sponsors.

GrouchyAdmin 08-26-2008 11:40 PM

If I'm working with a program, they're a 'sponsor'; if I'm speaking about someone whose doing the marketing as a contractor, that's an 'affiliate.'

On a case by case basis :)

If someone calls an affiliate program, or a sponsor an "affiliate", I generally want to smack them upside the head and tell them to get their wiring checked. Pet peeve.

Eigther Sponsor or Affiliate program.

An affiliate.

To me:

Sponsor program = Program sponsoring... events, ad buys, direct traffic.

Affiliate Program = Program using affiliate based marketing methods, paying affiliate websites for sales sent, etc.

Affiliate = Owner of website sending sales to an outside website... Could be a blog, could be a member's area, could be a website network.

A sponsor will most likely have an affiliate program and many affiliates will join the
sponsor and promote the sponsor's product.
