F$%#k!! Whats the best way to clean your computer? Its running slow
MY laptop is two years old and im noticing its chugging when running icq, photoshop, firefox and msn messager.
I cant even play a dvd with nothing else running with out it crapping out or being really choppy. Here are the specs to the laptop in question http://www.webcamcash.com/pics/myspa...ster/specs.jpg I did a defrage, i have spybot search and destroy and adware. It doesn't seem to do the trick. Is it the age of the laptop and is 1 gig of ram no enuff these days? Does removing a bunch of lesser used programs help? does having a desktop full of files slow it down? Is it worth taking it in to a pro? Any tips an ideas would help! |
It's running slow because it doesn't have enough ram from the looks of things. Buy another 1Gb stick if you can fit it in, or get a new laptop.

format C: is not a valid reply lol
|
clean up the stuff starting with your pc.
start > run > msconfig > startup there's probably 07234237423 things starting up with your laptop |
I agree with what dav3 and CunningStunt said!
|
did you run form @ c?
|
Clear out your startup, pump the ram, run Perfect Disk (great program), and check (especially on laptops) that your power settings and advanced configurations are giving processor and harddrives full power, not sticking you in a power save mode to save battery.
|
if you dont want to mess with your ram, increase your virtual ram
Right Click My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Advanced>Virtual Memory Change>Increase it to a higher set value, as long as you have the space on the HD it will use some of it for Virtual Ram usage. I also recommend running superantispyware on it + NOD 32. |
Desktop full of stuff never good.
|
that's a small amount of ram these days.
|
Try Spyware Doctor, free at http://pack.google.com
|
if you didn't have problems doing what you want to do in the past then stuff is now present on the machine that's slowing it down. Could be malware, but if not it's probs stuff all starting up with the machine that is legit and you just need to shut it down.
If all else fails...backup->format->reinstall the stuff you need. |
first get one more gig of ram
than let adaware, nod32 to do their thing and at last use hijackthis but be careful what are you killing that should speed up things enough |
You need to look at your Crtl+alt+del and #1. look at how many threads are running and how much ram & CPU is juked at all time. Click on the Performance Tab
You'll see Physical Mem Total and Avail, that'll let ya know if you need more. You'll also see CPU usage, that'll let ya know if your comp is overrun. Most likely its because you have a Dell :) (j/k) Really it all depends on how much RAM photoshop is eating up. You probably need 2 gig for that like everyone else says. Turn it off and see if you still have trouble. |
More Ram!
And reformat. Put back on only what you need and use. And stop installing toolbars :) |
I'm shocked, and appalled that nobody's suggested that you upgrade your RAM, yet. :thumbsup
|
best way to clean your computer is with some soap and water :upsidedow
On a serious note try using this tool also http://www.ccleaner.com/ Remove all the programs that you are not using. How much hard drive space do you have left? (double click my computer > right click on Local Disk > properties) |
you are running 1 gig of ram.... umm upgrade that would be a good start
|
fucking AWESOMEEEEEEE program to clean up temp files

The items on your desktop do slow things down. Disabling all start up programs will help a lot as well.

Beat it with a large stick
|
1. START/RUN/ Type "MSCONFIG" hit ENTER/STARTUP TAB
Disable anything you possibly can get by without Will make a huge difference Use SPYBOT to protect against shit being added without your knowledge 2. CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / ADVANCED TAB / PERFORMANCE / SETTINGS Select "Adjust for best performance" in visual effects tab Select PROGRAMS for both options under advanced tab Virtual memory CHANGE button / CUSTOM SIZE / enter 2222 in BOTH BOXES and click "SET". If you have a second hard drive, select it, custom size again/2222/set Click APPLY/OK until you're out 3. MY COMPUTER / RIGHT CLICK C DRIVE / PROPERTIES / UNCHECK "ALLOW INDEXING SERVICE" / CLICK APPLY / APPLY TO ALL SUBFOLDERS AND FILES 4. CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / SYSTEM RESTORE TAB Move the slider down to something reasonable.. no more than 2gb 5. CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE TAB / DEVICE MANAGER Look for any conflicts with the yellow "!" 6. Run windows update.. Install SP2 and all other relavent updates. DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 3 no matter what 7. Download Disk Keeper at http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp Use the boot time defragmentation feature. It will defragment the paging file, mft, and even system files because it can run without windows. Getting your paging file to a set size and getting it contiguous makes a BIG DIFFERENCE in performance. 8. Take the bottom cover off of your laptop and make sure that the fan port isn't obstructed in any way. Excess heat increases resistance and can slow a machine to a crawl. 9. Another good idea is to run a check disk.. START/RUN/CHKDSK /F It'll check the drive for errors and fix any it might find 10. Look for updated drivers for everything in your machine. Get them from the manufacturers and not from windows update. |
this thread is hilarious. Much simpler answer is, get a mac.

Go here and follow everything:

Change your hardware
