Target Settles Accessibility Lawsuit for $6 Million

Quote:

Over two years ago, Bruce Sexton tried to get Target to make their web site, target.com, more accessible for blind users. Target refused, so Sexton sued. This week, Target have finally agreed to make changes to their site to accommodate visually impaired visitors, and will pay damages of $6 million to those affected.

I always find it amusing when big companies forget that there are people with handicaps using the Internet.

It applies to small companies too. As fucked as they are the ADA shit applies to nearly everyone that is reachable via lawsuit in the US. They are already widely abused offline for quick payouts and I see no reason that it will not spread to the net as well.

The more sneaky ass lawyers who have such clients performing this quick cash suits offline have already fine tuned their asking amounts to make it nearly pointless to even attempt to fight them financially speaking and even if they did fight them on principles the law is really on the side of the plaintiffs. So typically they launch the paperwork and presto a settlement is reached and they pick a new business to go after.

Oh, I know. It is just that I expect more out of the big companies with an online presence.

I have mentioned a mainstream project we have (online consumer network). We have a grading system sponsors must pass to participate. Disability Compatibility is one of the sections in the system to get additional points.

Pay damages of $6 million? What damages?

It's very unfortunate that people abuse the ADA. It defeats the purpose, in my opinion. People do it all of the time.

Why so much?
