HELP! My dog has fleas

My beautiful 14 month old Golden Retriever has fleas and I can't get rid of them :Oh crap

I've been trying Frontline Plus for the past two months. it works for about ten days after applying it but then the fleas come back. I keep him inside except when we go out to exercise. I don't notice any fleas in the house, only on him.

I know there's lots of dog owners here so how do you handle fleas?

I want to make my puppy happy again :(

ask your vet... frontline usually does the trick....

my guess is you might not be using enough for his weight...

also, are you rubbing the frontline all the way down the back and rubbing it in well?

first thing you should probably do is have your house sprayed for fleas. just because you don't notice any doesn't mean they aren't there. Could be a bed of them in a rug, sleeping area, somewhere the dog sleeps or lays and they are re inhabiting him.

Apply Frontline Plus in carpets and couches too...

Give the dog Sentinel for heart worms. Sentinel also sterilizes the sex organs of any fleas that bite the dog... so this keeps them from reproducing when they jump off the dog... :)

Sentinel and Frontline Plus are the cadillac STS of flea protection :)

I got the frontline at the vet and they had just weighed him so I'm sure we got the right dose. They told me to put it between his shoulder blades on his skin. They said I could put some on his tail bone if I wanted.

I put it on while he was eating but it does seem to flow back out as his fur gets wet.

I heard Frontline was the answer but it's been only temporary for us and you can only use it monthly

This is probably offensive, but this is one option?

Fleas are building up a tolerance to Frontline and it doesn't work as well anymore.
Try advantix.

Have the house bombed for fleas. So it kills them all in all the little cracks. Also adding raw apple cider vinegar to his water will help. It makes his ph more acidic and fleas dont like it and as he is getting older its good for his joints.

It has to be raw not the stuff in the supermarket next to the salad dressing. If there is a whole foods by you they will have it.The company that makes it is called Braggs.

What area do you live in? I have a friend in Houston that had a huge flea problem .... They were infesting neighborhood yards and getting rid of them on a single dog basis was almost impossible. He had the problem for an entire summer.

acctman 09-04-2008 11:38 AM

Frontline is that best, works fast. petsmart sells it, in the vet area

arial 09-04-2008 11:40 AM

Use Advantage or Frontline, will kill the fleas within 12-24 hours. Also spray the base lines in your house/apt flea and egg killer as the eggs can live for weeks.

Get the 20 mule team on the case and spread it everywhere in your house.. Also, soak cotton balls with ucaliptis oil and put them around your house.. Also... Give the dog a bath with Dial dish soap....

Also, spread seven in your whole yard...

Frontline, ect. will work after you do all the above...

My pest control guy was here for his regular visit and I told him about the dog's fleas. He said get him Frontline Plus and that's all you need. I asked if I needed to spray the place or get this Diatomaceous Earth powder I've been hearing about and put it in the carpet to kill the fleas and he said no. The Front line would take care of it all. So far his way isn't working :upsidedow

Thanks for the link and I'll look into that.

There is a company "Truly Nolen" that can check/treat your yard for fleas. That might be your problem. Let us know ..... the expression on your dog is so pitiful :Oh crap

Lace 09-04-2008 12:02 PM

The vet has a pill that kills them almost instantly (i forget what its called but its like 2-5$ a pill) but you might have to bomb your house. They get into your carpet, couches and everything. I'd continue on the frontline too. A good place to get frontline plus is http://www.petsuppliesnet.com/list.htm - I've ordered from them a ton of times. It takes a bit since it's coming from Australia but has worked for me.

Someone told me about a pill like that. I think it's called capstar but it was only a temp thing. I'll get that if I have to but I was looking for a long term solution.

I live in a Townhouse so I don't have a yard but we go across the street where there is a big field and walking trails. I also take him to a lake and he comes out of that flea free but they're back after a day or two.

captain.g 09-04-2008 12:21 PM

Sounds like you have a nasty infestation.
You are going to have to bomb the house. Once the fleas are in the house they will stay. Frontline will control them on the dog once you remove the fleas from the carpet, dog bed, couch etc. You can get your dog dipped for fleas and that should kill all the adults leaving any eggs for frontline. Part the fur between the shoulder blades and put the Frontline as close to the skin as possible. It should not run off. Let it completely dry before you pet the area or wash her.
Worked on my dogs when we moved to the Ozark mountains.

:thumbsup

Remember when you treat him with Frontline not to let him get wet for at least 24hrs. And, unlike what someone else has said, I've heard you are not supposed to rub it in, but let it sit on the skin.

If he keeps getting reinfested, it sounds like you probably have fleas in the house. I think it would be impossible to have a dog with fleas and not have them living on his sleeping areas.

Try the Frontline powder that people have suggested. Do it before you dose your dog with the Frontline and then probably again after... I'm sure the instructions will tell you about stuff like that.

Like someone said, fleas are building up a tolerance to the usual treatments. If frontline isn't doing it, ask your vet to give you a different flea treatment.

theharvman 09-04-2008 12:58 PM

take him to the vet.

X Industry Jobs 09-04-2008 01:07 PM

Definitely have a professional check your house, bomb it, then apply the treatments to your dog. I've been lucky that my huge pup hasn't had fleas before, but I've had them with other dogs in the past.

greg1 09-04-2008 01:50 PM

it's awful...may be special bath and things can heip him?
