Uses of Bamboo
eat it, wear it, build with it, fight with it, make traps out of it, decorate with it (house plant, etc), make a sexual toy out of it, etc.
You can also get mildly obsessed with bamboo like I am. Does it give back nutrients to depleted soil (anybody know?)? Some species of bamboo also contain serotonin (weird, huh!?). What do you do with Bamboo? I'm carving some plugs for my ears with some right now. I also have a few stalks of bamboo laying in my room (I like to watch it as it dries from bright green into yellow and then tan). Please help me think of ideas we can use bamboo for (even theoretically, its fun ). Some pictures of this lovely stuff. |

However, the original poster asked if they give aything back to the soil - v. good question. I think they do cos they can turn crappy boggy soil into rich aerated soil so other plants thrive (if the bamboo isn't too dense. However, how well do they compost? I wouldn't mind knowing that.... I would think very very poorly, but curious minds need to know Bamboo also has a higher tensile strength than steel, making it a great building material. |
Bamboo Grows like crazy

It is indeed a great way to fuck up ones yard if not properly contained. As borked mentioned they send shoots underground. Most stay at a maximum of 12 inches yet some go to two and half feet. I have yet to see it contained by any man made stream or water trench, unless it is bamboo of the clumping variety. Really best to keep it contained another way.
The leaf and small plants compost fine. After a year the larger plants take forever even if mulched first (turned into small pieces). It also is a heavy feeder though it can survive with next to no real nutrients in the soil. Sort of along the lines of rose bushes is the best way to describe it. They can grow about anywhere but do best with food and water. It also can be illegal to plant in assorted areas due to city, county, or gated community laws. I really do like the plant/grass. Yet since the wife does landscaping it also is filed under evil plants one should not have to deal with ever when it comes to eradication. Shit can take years to fully kill in even a small yard. If it has hit the neighbors yards already, it is almost a lost cause. |
