LHC: Girl's suicide over Big Bang fear
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7609631.stm
A girl in India has committed suicide after watching TV reports that a physics experiment could bring about the end of the world, her father says. Sixteen-year-old Chaya poisoned herself at her home in the northern city of Indore, Bihari Lal said. He said Chaya had asked whether the "world would end" when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was switched on. Some news channels had held discussions featuring doomsday predictions about the European experiment. 'Village would die' The £5bn ($8.75bn) machine, which aims to recreate the conditions a few moments after the Big Bang, was switched on early on Wednesday. Set on the Swiss-French border, it is designed to smash protons together along a 27km-long tunnel with cataclysmic force and scientists hope it will shed light on fundamental questions in physics. We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things Bihari Lal Father Chaya's father, Bihari Lal, said his daughter - the eldest of his six children - had been frightened after watching local TV reports that the experiment would cause the "Earth to crack up and everybody in the village would die". "We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail," he told reporters. In a report published earlier this year, the European Organization for Nuclear Research said the the collider presented "no conceivable danger". The police in Indore has begun an investigation into Chaya's death. Many people rushed to temples in various parts of India on Tuesday fearing the "world's end" after watching the reports, reports said. |
sad very sad
|
It's sad, but severely stupid. She's afraid the world might end when they flip on the LHC, so she goes ahead and makes absolutely sure that the world will end for herself. :error
|
what a fucking moron

Some people are too fucking stupid. |
Gee are we looking to get paid over this or what?
|
how about this for a more accurate headline:
"shitty parents failed to realize their daughter desperately needed psychiatric help, didn't get her help and daughter dies as a result" |
"had been frightened after watching local TV reports that the experiment would cause the "Earth to crack up and everybody in the village would die".
Now there is quality news coverage ...... lol, WTF? |
Apparently she was a regular poster on GFY.
|
Sad, but how stupid can you be.
|
How it went:
Kid: "Dad... will the world end when that machine is turned on?" Dad's Response: "Uh, I don't know..." Good one dad....FAIL. |
Why kill yourself if the world is ending? ... maybe she did it in a sacrificial way?

Although the story itself is sad, that post made me laugh. :1orglaugh |
this isnt funny.. i thought about offing myself too over this.. close call.. im stoked they world didnt end, i would have look a lil silly.

In any case, if a news channel is reporting this could end the world (who is that, fox?) then it's just dumb. The boffins are recreating parts of the big bang - ie high speed collision between protons. Not the frikken big bang itself. :pimp |

"Porn industry poisons young girl's innocent mind; commits suicide" |
lolllllllll
i was thinking about this the other day. wondering how many cults were going to drink the juice before they switched the fucker on and how i was going to laugh when nothing happened. |
That's very sad...fault of the lack of information!

sorry... but a human being doesn't go from "totally fine" to "i'm going to kill myself today" because of a tv show. the tv show is an excuse and might have been a trigger... but obviously not the "cause" and fuck any parent that wants to blame other shit! be a fucking parent... or don't have kids. |
and here's something for you to think about... i'm 38. i don't have children. Why? because i never wanted to have children until i felt i was in a place to be the best possible father.
Kids aren't puppies or pets.... its really too bad 1/2 the fucking planet acts like they are. |

Do you have teenagers? Did you ask your mama why she let you become a porn slinger and a resident stupid fuck on GFY? |
I have been following the development of the machine .. I worked on one up here in Vancouver years ago and it is only 1 mile long .. but they explained how it works and what the theory behind it pretty well to me ..So when they flashed up this huge LCH .. i actually took a deep breath and looked at my kids ... read about it .. this is serious possibly life as we know it physics ..

There are stupid people everywhere I guess. I could expect something like this in a country where people were uneducated, but India has a pretty high education level.
|
None of the above, I just know by your comments, that you dont have kids...if you did, you live in la la land thinking that you know what they are thinking or feeling 24/7.
I would love for you to stand in front of every parent that has had a teenager kill themselves and tell them they are shitty parents and should have been more aware. Internet backbone doesnt mean shit in real life BOZO. |

Stupidity abounds in the world.

Of course, being in a stable relationship helps too. |

Thank goodness. Imagine if she had been given the opportunity to breed. The gene pool is that much better today.

People kill themselves over stupid fears every day.
That's why anti anxiety / depression meds are a multi multi trillion dollar industry. |

What happened to eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die? Now people just assume they will? |

EDIT: Realized they were Indian and just pray for psychiatric help. Never mind. |
I don't think it has as much to do with her being stupid, as much as ignorant or unworldly. The blame falls on the media for being stupid pricks and reporting everything like its the end of the world.
|
this is serious shit ..
http://atlas.ch/ if they do create a black whole we are fucked .. ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Starting later in 2008, the ATLAS detector will search for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate. Among the possible unknowns are the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space, microscopic black holes, and evidence for dark matter candidates in the universe. |

lol at that machine... If it sucks us in, we will never notice1
|
Would have saved so much pain if they had just shown her this. |
Sucks to kill yourself over misinformation. They just turned it on, they wont be smashing particles for another few weeks. That's when the world is really going to end.

Im kinda in the middle of both arguements here. Just to be clear I am the mother of 2 teenagers (13 & 15)
Obviously there was an underlying mental health problem or other issues. I have to agree with the statement that a "normal" teenager would not kill themselves after a tv show. One of the effects of ADHD is an unnatural fear of storms, hurricanes ect. My son is ADHD and when he was younger had an irrational fear of tornados even though we live in an area where there are no tornados, or at least very very rarely. As far as her parents not being proactive about her fear alot of teenagers are by nature secretive of their feelings and and they may have had no way of knowing just how fearful she was of that happening. Its a shame a life was wasted over something so trivial and I feel for her family who I am sure are blaming themselves. I could not imagine having to deal with the grief of burying a child, especially after a suicide. |
poor emo girl :/

I Understand people who have little understanding of what this LHC is capable of or the scientific principles behind it being scared. It is ridiculous that almost all the news covering this are only covering the shit that COULD go wrong and creating a bunch of senseless fear mongering. 1. As far as seeking answers for what happened seconds after the big bang? Some people are saying this could destroy the planet or universe. Why won't it? For starters the Big Bang occured from a finite point of mass exploding into a vacuum of nothing. This wasn't just a few protons colliding with each other. Since our universe already has all the matter it will ever have it is impossible to create another finite point of mass of the same magnitude of the Big Bang without sucking up our entire universe to recreate the same result. 2. As far as creating Black Holes? They will be microscopic black holes, actually smaller, and the chances of them surviving less than a second after creation is very very slim. Why is that? Hawking Radiation. There will not be enough surrounding mass or energy for it to sustain itself and will simply fizzle out almost as quickly as it formed. In short. The LHC will not destroy us or our planet. Just like the atomic bomb didn't when they first tested it and scientist were in fear that it would ignite the nitrogen in our atmosphere. |
wow... at least didn't she want to see what would happen?
|
very sad to hear.. i hope it didn't have to do with anything else..
|
How in the fuck does this make the headlines? She obviously had some serious mental issues that did not relate in any way to the LHC.
